  • Is rushing always faster than strolling? A reaction time study on the processing of sentences containing manner of motion verbs

Open Access•Linda von Sobbe, Rolf Ulrich et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2021

In the context of the embodied cognition debate, an effect of motion verb associated speed information has previously been detected using eye-tracking, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and reaction times (RT). The latter, for instance, was implemented by Wender and Weber (1982), who observed that participants were faster in detecting motion in sentences associated with fast motion compared to sentences associated with slow motion aft…

  • Wider die Klammerparadoxie

    Open Access•Claudia Maienborn•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft•2020

This paper deals with so-called "bracketing paradoxes" composed of an adjective and an NN compound, such as German katholisches Kirchenoberhaupt 'catholic church.head'. In these constructions, the adjectival modifier seems to relate to the nominal non-head, thereby challenging the principle of compositionality. After summarizing some core empirical observations by Bergmann (1980) and reviewing relevant theoretical approaches The analysis develope…

  • Coercion by modification — The adaptive capacities of event-sensitive adnominal modifiers

    Open Access•Sebastian Bücking, Claudia Maienborn•ARTICLE•Semantics and Pragmatics•2019

This paper is about coercive meaning adaptions as triggered by modifiers. It pursues two objectives. First, we argue that coercion by modification is rooted in the linguistic system. More specifically, given a pending type-conflict between a modifier and its target, fine-grained lexical typing information is shown to both license and constrain adaptive options. Notably, such a dynamic lexical semantics integrates conceptual knowledge resources in…

  • The Semantic Processing of Motion Verbs

Open Access•Julia Lukassek, Anna Prysłopska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psycholinguistic…•2017•Referências: 17

Underspecification and coercion are two prominent interpretive mechanisms to account for meaning variability beyond compositionality. While there is plentiful evidence that natural language meaning constitution exploits both mechanisms, it is an open issue whether a concrete phenomenon of meaning variability is an instance of underspecification or coercion. This paper argues that this theoretical dispute can be settled experimentally. The test ca…

  • Adverbial Modifiers in Adjectival Passives

Claudia Maienborn, Helga Gese et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2016

The combination of adjectival passives with adverbial modifiers poses a problem for current adjectival conversion analyzes of the adjectival passive. An influential proposal by Kratzer ( 1994 , 2000 ) has been to explain the appearance of adverbial modifiers by assuming adjectival conversion not only at the lexical but also at the phrasal VP level. The present article develops an alternative account for the semantics of adjectival passives and th…

  • Adjectival Conversion of Unaccusatives in German

Open Access•Helga Gese, Claudia Maienborn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Germanic Linguistics•2011

The paper presents an in-depth study of the conditions under which unaccusative verbs in German take part in the formation of so-called ADJECTIVAL PASSIVES. It provides corpus-linguistic as well as psycho-linguistic evidence arguing that combinations of sein ‘to be’ with the participle of an unaccusative verb are systematically ambiguous between a present perfect reading (with sein as auxiliary) and an adjectival reading (with sein as copula). Th…

  • Das Zustandspassiv. Grammatische Einordnung – Bildungsbeschränkung – Interpretationsspielraum

    Claudia Maienborn•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für germanistische…•2007

The German adjectival passive, or “Zustandspassiv”, belongs to the most controversial topics of German grammar. The controversy centers around the following questions: What is the grammatical status of the Zustandspassiv: Does it belong to the verbal paradigm or is it a combination of copula plus adjectivized verbal participle? What are the restrictions governing its construction and combination? And what is its characteristic meaning range? The …

  • On the limits of the Davidsonian approach

    Claudia Maienborn•ARTICLE•Theoretical Linguistics•2005

Since Donald Davidson’s seminal work ‘‘The Logical Form of Action Sentences’’ (1967) event arguments have become an integral component of virtually every semantic theory. Over the past years Davidson’s proposal has been continuously extended such that nowadays event(uality) arguments are generally associated not only with action verbs but with predicates of all sorts. The reasons for such an extension are seldom explicitly justified. Most problem…

  • A Discourse-Based Account of Spanish ser/estar

    Open Access•Claudia Maienborn•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2005•Citada por: 5

The study offers a discourse-based account of the Spanish copula forms ser and estar, which are generally considered to be lexical exponents of the stage-level/individual-level contrast. It argues against the popular view that the distinction between SLPs and ILPs rests on a fundamental cognitive division of the world that is reflected in the grammar. As it happens, conceptual oppositions like “temporary vs. permanent” or “arbitrary vs. essential…

  • Modification and underspecification

    Open Access•Claudia Maienborn•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2000

The present paper offers evidence that there are two variants of adverbial modification that differ with respect to the way in which a modifier is linked to the verb's eventuality argument. So-called external modifiers relate to the full eventuality, whereas internal modifiers relate to some integral part of it. The choice between external and internal modification is shown to be dependent on the modifier's syntactic base position. External modif…

  • Situationsbezug und die Stadien/Individuen-Distinktion bei Kopula-Prädikativ-Konstruktionen

    Open Access•Claudia Maienborn•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•1999

Within the Davidsonian paradigm copula-predicative constructions are commonly assumed to involve a state argument. Its source is taken to be either the copula 'be' (cf. e.g. Bierwisch 1988) or the predicative (cf. the ongoing stage level/individual level debate). Yet, a critical examination of copula-predicative constructions in contexts that call for Davidsonian arguments (locative modifiers, manner adverbials, perception verbs, etc.) reveals th…
