Vulgar Minimisers in English and Spanish 1
In this paper, we investigated whether vulgar minimisers form a natural class in English and Spanish by evaluating (i) their similarities and differences with respect to non‐vulgar minimisers and (ii) whether vulgar minimisers are inherently negative in these languages. Inferential Interrogatives with qué in Spanish
In this paper, we discuss the evidential properties of inferential interrogative sentences with qué in Spanish. This interrogative type exhibits the shape of a wh-question but the interpretation of a polar question. Inflected Infinitives in Romance
In this chapter we explore the properties of inflected infinitives in Portuguese and establish a parallelism with Spanish and Italian infinitives, which are not overtly inflected. The different behaviors concerning complementation, both in finites and in infinitives, are suggested to be derived from the presence of a tense feature in the complementizer. Extraction from gerunds and the internal syntax of verbs
This paper provides an analysis of transparent gerunds in Spanish, as in¿Qué llegó [silbandoqué] Juan?'What arrived [whistlingwhat] Juan?', using a decomposition of Aktionsart in a series of syntactic heads. A traditional analysis of these secondary predicates as adjuncts would undermine well-established syntactic principles restricting movement and extraction. Towards a typology of focus
In this work I explore the different discourse–syntax interface properties of focus fronting in Standard Spanish (SS) and Southern Peninsular Spanish (SPS) including Andalusian and Extremaduran varieties.
