Modals in imperatives
Two competing views regarding the syntax-semantics of imperatives can be distinguished. A minimal view assumes that imperatives are properties in semantics, and their syntax is rather bare, while the modal approach maintains that imperatives are propositions that contain a (covert) performative modal in syntax. A tale of two Evens
Although it is generally considered that even triggers both additive and scalar inferences, there are cases where only one of them can be detected. We argue that the two EVENs in Mandarin Chinese ( shenzhi and lian . dou ) may provide a clue to this puzzle. Specifically, we show that the clausal EVEN ( shenzhi ) always gives rise to a scalar inference, and its additive inference is canceled when the alternatives are mutually incompatible. Meanwhi…
Extraction asymmetries in topic structures
Against the Low Periphery as Phrase Markers
We argue that the contrastive dislocation to the low peripheral position in Mandarin Chinese does not target phrase markers, like TopicP or FocusP, contra recent proposals that attempt to extend the cartographic theory to the low IP ‐area. We argue that such dislocations are best analyzed as PF movements, which display the total reconstruction effect and do not affect the LF interface.
