  • The copula as a discourse-anaphoric pairing predicate

Open Access•Jo-Wang Lin, Yen-Hui Audrey Li•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Linguistics•2026

This paper argues that the overt shì in Mandarin pair-list answers functions as a discourse-anaphoric pairing predicate rather than a standard copula, or a focus marker. The relevant mapping is not created by overt shì itself, but is established by the Question under Discussion (QUD) structure, introduced explicitly by pair-list questions or accommodated from distributive discourse. Within this framework, overt pair-list shì retrieves one pairing…

  • A Tenseless Analysis of Mandarin Chinese Revisited

    Jo-Wang Lin•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2010

Sybesma (2007) argues for the existence of a syntactic T node in Chinese on the basis of general theoretical considerations and parallel empirical data from Dutch and Chinese. This reply shows that a tenseless analysis of Chinese is an equally viable alternative or even a better one, given some empirical problems that the tensed analysis has to face. The tenseless analysis is backed up not only by its ability to explain the data in a more elegant…

  • Time in a Language Without Tense

    Jo-Wang Lin•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2006

This paper outlines a framework of the temporal interpretation in Chinese with a special focus on complement and relative clauses. It argues that not only does Chinese have no morphological tenses but there is no need to resort to covert semantic features under a tense node in order to interpret time in Chinese. Instead, it utilises various factors such as the information provided by default aspect, the tense-aspect particles, and pragmatic reaso…

  • Selectional restrictions of tenses and temporal reference of Chinese bare sentences

  • Aspectual selection and negation in Mandarin Chinese

    Open Access•Jo-Wang Lin•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2003•Citada por: 5•Referências: 16

This paper argues that the distributions of bu 'not' and mei 'not' in Mandarin Chinese can be accounted for in terms of their aspectual selections. I propose that while mei aspectually selects an event as its complement, bu aspectually selects as its complement a stative situation that requires no input of energy in order to obtain that situation. I show that this approach to the distributions of bu and mei better accounts for the data than previ…

  • Lexical government and tone group formation in Xiamen Chinese

    Open Access•Jo-Wang Lin•ARTICLE•Phonology•1994

The study of the relation between syntactic structure and phonological representation has attracted the attention of many phonologists in the past few years. One important contribution to this field of study is Chen's (1987) work on Xiamen Chinese tone sandhi domains. He suggests that the syntax–phonology relation appeals to syntactic information such as category types and the edges of syntactic bracketings. This insight has been further elaborat…
