Māori Expert Views of Antimicrobial Resistance Using a One Health Approach
Māori experience disproportionately worse outcomes from infectious diseases compared to non-Māori, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) contributes to these inequities. The aim of the study reported in this article was to gain insight into Māori experts’ perspectives on AMR using a One Health approach, which incorporates understandings of human, animal and environmental health. Qualitative methods were applied and were guided by principles of Kaupa…
Quality of life in people living with HIV in Aotearoa New Zealand
Quality of life (QoL) in people living with HIV (PLHIV) is reportedly worse than in people without HIV, with many factors impacting on this. We aimed to investigate QoL in PLHIV in New Zealand (NZ). In-person interviews were conducted including socio-demographic, health, social connectedness, and stigma-related questions. QoL was measured using the 13-question PozQoL Scale – summed to give a score between 13 and 65. Univariate linear regression w…
Effectiveness of Border Screening for Detecting Influenza in Arriving Airline Travelers
Objectives. We measured symptom and influenza prevalence, and the effectiveness of symptom and temperature screening for identifying influenza, in arriving international airline travelers. Methods. This cross-sectional study collected data from travelers to Christchurch International Airport, New Zealand, in winter 2008, via a health questionnaire, temperature testing, and respiratory sampling. Results. Forms were returned by 15 976 (68%) travele…
We should not be complacent about our population-based public health response to the first influenza pandemic of the 21stcentury
Border screening, school closure, widespread anti-viral prophylaxis and a pandemic-specific vaccine were unlikely to have been effective during a pandemic which was less severe than anticipated in the pandemic plans of many countries. These were cornerstones of the population-based public health response. Similar responses would be even less likely to be effective in a more severe pandemic. We agree with the recommendation from the World Health O…
P1-295 Screening for influenza at the border
Introduction The aim of border screening for influenza is to prevent or delay the entry of a new pandemic strain, but the evidence base for this strategy is limited. This study aimed to assess the test characteristics of a health questionnaire and temperature measurement for predicting influenza infection in arriving international travellers. Methods A questionnaire was distributed on board flights from Australia to Christchurch, New Zealand duri…
Screening for Influenza Infection in International Airline Travelers
We sought the collaboration of an international airline and border control agencies to study the feasibility of entry screening to identify airline travelers at increased risk of influenza infection. Although extensive and lengthy negotiations were required, we successfully developed a multisector collaboration and demonstrated the logistical feasibility of our screening protocol. We also determined the staffing levels required for a larger study…
Food and nutrient availability in New Zealand
Objective To examine food and nutrient availability in New Zealand using supermarket sales data in conjunction with a brand-specific supermarket food composition database (SFD). Design The SFD was developed by selecting the top-selling supermarket food products and linking them to food composition data from a variety of sources, before merging with individualised sales data. Supermarket food and nutrient data were then compared with data from nat…

Randomised studies of income supplementation
BACKGROUND: Despite the wealth of evidence linking low income to ill health, there is little information from randomised studies on how much and how quickly these risks can be reversed by improvements in income. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of randomised studies of income supplementation, with particular reference to health outcomes. DESIGN: Extensive searches of electronic databases and contact with previous authors. As well as sear…
