Bounded rationality
The notion of “bounded rationality” was introduced by Simon as an appropriate framework for explaining how agents reason and make decisions in accordance with their computational limitations and the characteristics of the environments in which they exist (seen metaphorically as two complementary scissor blades). We elaborate on how bounded rationality is usually conceived in psychology and on its relationship with logic. We focus on the relationsh…
Communication, Goals, and Counterexamples in Syllogistic Reasoning
We report on a study on syllogistic reasoning conceived with the idea that subjects’ performance in experiments is highly dependent on the communicative situations in which the particular task is framed. From this perspective, we describe the results of Experiment 1 comparing the performance of undergraduate students in 5 different tasks. This between-subjects comparison inspires a within-subject intervention design (Experiment 2). The variations…
Seeking Common Cause between Cognitive Science and Ethnography
Alternative logics have been invoked periodically to explain the systematically different modes of thought of the subjects of ethnography: one logic for ‘us’ and another for ‘them’. Recently anthropologists have cast doubt on the tenability of such an explanation of difference. In cognitive science, [Stenning and van Lambalgen, 2008] proposed that with the modern development of multiple logics, at least several logics are required for making sens…
The Role of Communication in Learning To Model
In this book, a number of experts from various disciplines take a look at three different strands in learning to model. They examine the activity of modeling from disparate theoretical standpoints, taking into account the individual situation of the individuals involved. The chapters seek to bridge the modeling of communication and the modeling of particular scientific domains. In so doing, they seek to throw light on the educational communicatio…
Seeing ReasonImage and Language in Learning to Think
‘A picture is worth a thousand words.’ Or is it? What difference does it make whether information is presented using illustrations or language? This book is an interdisciplinary study of a central topic in cognitive science: how does the mind respond to different kinds of representation of the same information, especially when learning, reasoning, and communicating. It uses philosophical, logical, linguistic, psychological, and educational method…

The Role of Parallelism in Strategies of Pronoun Comprehension
Two experiments investigated the role of parallelism in strategies of pronoun assignment and tested the proposition that a parallel function strategy and the subject assignment strategy jointly contribute to the interpretation of pronouns. The parallel function strategy interprets a pronoun as coreferential with a preceding noun phrase in the same grammatical role, while the subject assignment strategy interprets a pronoun as coreferential with a…

Learning how to tell a good story
This paper describes the development of explanation and its expression in the storytelling of 5‐ to 10‐year‐old children. The children were asked to tell the story contained in a picture book as they looked through it, and afterward were asked questions about the key sequences. These sequences in the children's narratives were coded as Confused, Descriptive, or Explanatory and the language was coded for several features important for establishing…
