Out of habitat marine mammals – Identification, causes, and management recommendations
An out of habitat (OOH) marine mammal is an individual found outside of their natural range, e.g., an Atlantic walrus ( Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus ) along the coastline of mainland Europe, or an individual within their natural range in habitat that is not optimal for their health or survival due to a lack of suitable conditions and/or because of potential conflict with humans. As the number of OOH marine mammals appears to be increasing, and foll…
Forecasting climate-associated non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections in the UK using international surveillance data and machine learning
Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) cause skin and lung infections, have high mortality rates, and are resistant to a range of antibiotics and water treatment methods. As NTM reside in environmental reservoirs, they are sensitive to environmental conditions. The suitability of their environmental reservoirs can increase as a result of climate change, subsequently increasing environmental exposure and infection rates. NTM infections are not generall…

Shifting baseline syndrome among coral reef scientists
The ‘shifting baseline syndrome’ has received much attention and acceptance within the conservation science community. In this study, the ‘shifting baseline syndrome’ based on which each generation of fisheries scientists accepts the stock size and species composition extant in the beginning of their careers as the normal baseline, as proposed by Pauly in 1995, was tested. It was hypothesized that Florida Keys reef scientists use the reef conditi…

More evidence of unsustainable dolphin-watching practices in Bocas del Toro, Panama

Non-governmental Organizations and Government Agencies Lead in Cultivating Positive Sea Turtle Conservation Attitudes
Considerable research has been conducted analyzing how demographic characteristics influence the public’s attitudes toward wildlife; however, less research of this type has been conducted in locations having long-standing species conservation efforts. Questionnaires were completed by residents living adjacent to such a location, the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge (ACNWR), to investigate which demographics explained residents’ knowledge of, …
So you think you want to run an environmental conservation meeting? Advice on the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune that accompany academic conference planning

What's in a Name? Do Species' Names Impact Student Support for Conservation
Many animal populations are in need of conservation, but due to limited resources, prioritizing which species should receive conservation funding is challenging (Wilson, Joseph, Moore, & Possingham
The Perceived Conservation Status of Polar Bears and Penguins
Polar bears and penguin species are considered climate change icons by the news media. The polar bear has arguably been the global warming flagship animal since Al Gore's 2006 documentary An Inconv

The Impact of Information on Students' Beliefs and Attitudes Toward Coyotes
Providing information to the public about a species can impact the public's attitudes toward that species. Overall, providing information in any of four categories of information about coyotes positively influenced attitudes toward coyotes using six attitudinal measurements (p < .01). Behavior statements most positively influenced attitudes, followed by images of coyotes, statements about humans and coyotes, and statements about coyote ecology. H…
Awareness of Whale Conservation Status and Whaling Policy in the US-A Preliminary Study on American Youth
In 2008, a preliminary study was conducted to provide information on awareness of cetacean (whale, dolphin and porpoise) conservation issues and the US government's policy on whaling, in a test group of US university students (n = 230). When given a list of whale species, 39% of the participants incorrectly thought that the humpback whale was the most threatened whale species (blue whale: 24.8%; northern minke whale: 20.9%; gray whale: 10.4%). On…
Sea monsters and mermaids in Scottish folklore
The folklore of the highlands and islands of Scotland includes many stories about sightings of sea monsters and mermaids. However, several of these stories contain descriptions of unusual features that are also distinct characteristics of living marine animals, notably manatees (Trichechus spp.), leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) and several cetacean species, including the narwhal (Monoceros monoceros). It is suggested that an analysis o…
