Rock Art in the Bartang Rock Shelter (Eastern Pamir)
The article presents the results of research on a newly discovered rock art site — the Bartang Cave located in the Kurtake Valley (Eastern Pamir, Republic of Tajikistan). The site was identified during the 2024 field surveys, and the archaeological study was conducted in 2025. The cave is associated with Jurassic limestone outcrops at an altitude of 4142 m above sea level. Five pigmentmade images were recorded in the cave. All of the images repre…
Markansu III – a New Stone Age Site in the Eastern Pamirs
In 2025, as part of the work of the Pamir Archaeological Team of the IAET SB RAS in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Eastern Pamir, Republic of Tajikistan), a new archaeological site Markansu III was established. In the course of survey of the left side of the wide valley of the Koksoy River, archaeological material both separate and in clusters was recorded exposed on the top of a high moraine (50–70 m from the valley floor), 3. km northe…
Study of the Tepakul-5 Site (Zaravshan Range, Uzbekistan) during the 2025 Field Season
The Zeravshan Range, particularly its northern slopes, is an essential region for studying the Neolithization processes in Central Asia. Active field investigations of Mesolithic and Neolithic sites have been carried out here for over a century under the leadership of D.N. Lev, M.D. Dzhurakulov, and N.U. Kholmatov. As a result of these studies, the Neolithic sites in the area were classified into the Sazagan Neolithic culture. During the 2025 arc…
Study of Ovicaprine Teeth Using ZooMS and Isotopic Analysis (a Case Study of Neolithic Materials from the Jeitun Site)
This study focuses on the analysis of M2 and M3 ovicaprine teeth using ZooMS and stable isotope methods. The samples were derived from the Neolithic site of Jeitun (Turkmenistan), one of the key centers of early agriculture in Central Asia. Using the ZooMS (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry) technique, 14 ovicaprine tooth samples collected during the excavations conducted by V.M. Masson and D. Harris in 1989–1990 were taxonomically identified t…
Inner Asian Agropastoralism Within the Mongol Empire
Agropastoralism has been a widespread subsistence strategy in Central Asia from prehistory to the present. While significant research has aimed at understanding past agropastoral communities in the region, reconstructing a generalized economic model remains challenging due to the complex topographic and ecological conditions, as well as its social and political variability. It is likely that subsistence strategies were flexible and adapted to loc…
The Results of Experimental Microblade Pressure Flaking on Flint Raw Materials from the Altai Mountains
The article presents the results of experimental pressure flaking of flint aimed at the production of microliths. The raw materials used in the experiments are identical to those from the Neolithic and Mesolithic complexes of the Tytkesken-2, 3, 6 and Ust-Biyke-I sites in the Altai Mountains and come from the Katun river terraces at the mouth of the Tytkesken River. A total of 13 experiments were conducted. Seven of them, due to defects in raw ma…
Testing the Sample Preparation Method and Oxygen Isotopic Analysis of Tooth Enamel for the Reconstruction of the Birth Seasonality of Ovicaprines (the Case of Teeth from Istykskaya Cave, Eastern Pamir…
Research of Knapping Techniques by Three-Dimensional Modeling Methods (Evidence from the Obishir-5 Site, Kyrgyzstan)
This article discusses the application of 3D modeling methods for analyzing the collection of cores from the Obishir-5 site (Fergana Valley, Southwestern Kyrgyzstan). Using literature and archaeological evidence, the team of authors has developed a list of criteria for determining the pressure and percussion knapping techniques thus making it possible to attribute most of the cores (63 pcs.) from the collection of the Obishir-5 site to one of the…
Mashale III
An objective of the Russian-Tajik expedition in 2024 included the discovery of new archaeological sites along the Mashale River (Eastern Pamir). Previously, during work conducted in the 1970s, V.A. Zhukov identified four Stone Age sites in this valley: Mashale I, rock shelter Mashale, Mashale II, and Jarty Gumbez. During recent surveys, two new caves, Mashale III and Mashale IV, were discovered. This reviews the preliminary results of the archaeo…
[Re]Integrating a dispersed agenda
Amid resurgent geopolitical fissures and in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a growing awareness in the sector of the need for, and concern about, national and international collaboration in archaeological projects. Testing the Sample Preparation Method and Oxygen Isotopic Analysis of Tooth Enamel for the Reconstruction of the Birth Seasonality of Ovicaprines (the Case of Teeth from Istykskaya Cave, Eastern Pamir…
Cyclic variations of δ18O along the growth line of M2 and M3 molars provide information about the seasonality of enamel formation and thereby about reproductive seasonality in animals, taking into account the time of tooth eruption and full enamel maturation. Determination of birth seasonality of small ruminants is relevant to the reconstruction of pastoralist strategies. Two peaks of reproductive activity per year are one of the most reliable in…

The results of re-examination of the Neolithic materials from the Ak-Tangi site (northern Tajikistan)
The paper reports on the results of reinterpretation of the Neolithic complexes of Hissar I-IV of the Ak-Tangi site, a field study of which was carried out in the middle of the 20th century. At the time of its discovery, only the Hissar Neolithic Culture had been studied in the mountainous part of Central Asia, which the Ak-Tangi materials were attributed to. At the new stage of the research, a comprehensive analysis of the archival materials and…
Late Pleistocene Environments of East Kazakhstan (Based on Ushbulak Site Materials)

New Interpretation of the Lithic Assemblage Location in Sai Djanurpa (Eastern Caspian)
The central geographical position of the Caspian region plays a key role in understanding the historical processes which took place in the territory of Central Asia. One of the important geological factors that influenced the processes of settlement in this region by ancient populations is the transgressive-regressive variability of the Caspian sea level and access to fresh water. There are dozens of Early Holocene sites on the Krasnovodsk Penins…

The dawn of the Middle Palaeolithic in western Central Asia
The Sel’Ungur Cave plays a crucial role in our understanding of the initial occupation of Central Asia. During the field campaign of 2014-1016, the techno-complex characterized by the non-Levallois flake knapping and a production of plano-convex bifaces has been recovered. Investigations of Sel’Ungur Cave in 2017 have provided new preliminary data on the earliest stages of Western Central Asia occupation, probably by Neanderthals
