Three 20th Century "Revolutions" in American Geography
During the 20th century, the evolution of American geography went through three major periods of change. The first period of change, which began in the 1920s and extended through the 1930s, initially consisted of a move away from environmental determinism toward "man-land" relations; then a move from man-land relations to an emphasis on regional study, or areal differentiation. The second change period, from the early 1950s to the late 1960s, saw…

Interactions Between Spread-and-Backwash, Population Turnaround and Corridor Effects in the Inter-Metropolitan Periphery
Three recurrent concepts in urban geography are examined in a single area within a portion of the inter-metropolitan periphery, primarily for the 1960-1980 period. This local-scale study attempts to replicate several findings of studies involving larger units dispersed over wider regions. In this portion of the inter-metropolitan periphery, spread-and-backwash was evident in the 1960s, followed by the population turnaround in the 1970s but only w…

Extended Commuting and the Intermetropolitan Periphery
Extended metropolitan commuting is commonly related to a decline of the intermetropolitan periphery. It is frequently postulated that this peripheral zone will continue to shrink, and even vanish, as metropolitan commuting fields push ever outward, aided by the construction of limited access highways. To study this phenomenon, the intermetropolitan periphery of Appalachian Ohio is examined in terms of the trends evident in extended commuting from…
A Formalization and Test of the "Hollow Frontier" Hypothesis
A persistent theme in Brazilian agricultural development is the presence of a “hollow frontier.” Although the concept was proposed almost forty years ago, there has been little empirical testing of its basic tenets. In this paper the hypothesis tested is that a maximum production ridge advances over time away from the areas of initial cultivation in the State of Sāo Paulo. The results of the analysis confirm the presence of a “hollow frontier” in…

Growth Poles in São Paulo, Brazil∗
Growth pole concepts appear particularly useful to regional planners who are faced with the task of designing a strategy for analyzing and inducing regional growth. This study employs a form of trend surface analysis which identifies urban places that may be interpreted as growth poles and measures trends in growth outward from those poles. An empirical example is provided for the State of São Paulo, Brazil, for the period 1940 to 1960. Two types…
