    John L McKenna, Lizabeth Roemer et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology and Sexuality•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 18

Sexual consent campaigns aimed at reducing risk of sexual violence have historically been informed by research focusing almost exclusively on heterosexual young adults despite concerning rates of sexual violence committed against sexual minorities. Unfortunately, very little research has quantitatively compared how sexual consent attitudes may differ between men and women of different sexual identities. The current study attempts to help address …

Sample: Two-hundred students of color at a large, public university in Northeastern United States. Methods: We evaluated the associ…

  • The mediating role of internalized racism in the relationship between racist experiences and anxiety symptoms in a Black American sample

    Jessica Graham, Jessica R Graham et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2016•Citada por: 36•Referências: 26

Internalized racism may be 1 mechanism that underlies the relationship between racism and anxious symptomology for Black Americans. These preliminary findings suggest that internalized racism may be an avenue through which clinicians can target the anxiety elicited by racist experiences. The clinical implications of these findings and future research directions are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record

Results indicated that church-based social support moderated the relationship between racist experienc…

  • Implications of Perceived Interpersonal and Structural Racism for Asian Americans' Self-Esteem

John Tawa, Karen L Suyemoto et al.•ARTICLE•Basic and Applied Social Psychology•2012•Citada por: 11•Referências: 18

This research considers the relationship between perceived racism and self-esteem among Asian Americans. In theory, perceiving racism protects racial minorities' self-esteem because disparate treatment is externally attributed to a racist system rather than internally attributed to a personal or racial group deficit. However, previous empirical research has not generally supported this perspective, particularly for Asian Americans. Correlational …

  • A preliminary investigation of the effects of experimentally induced mindfulness on emotional responding to film clips

    Shannon M Erisman, Lizabeth Roemer•ARTICLE•Emotion•2010

Despite encouraging preliminary findings regarding the efficacy of mindfulness and acceptance-based treatments for a range of psychological presentations, we have yet to elucidate mechanisms of action within these treatments. One mechanism through which mindfulness may reduce psychological symptoms and promote functioning is enhancing emotional responding and regulation. In this study, we used multimodal assessment to examine the effects of a bri…

Perceived racial discrimination (PRD) has deleterious effects on Black Americans. However, there is minimal empirical research on the influence of gender and coping on the relationship between PRD and mental health. This study posited that coping style (i.e., problem-focused coping and avoidant coping) would moderate the relationship between PRD and depressive symptoms in Black women. The sample included 91 Black women (mean age of 23.32 years) f…
