  • Optimism at the End of Time

    A Kublitz•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•2023

Danish Muslims who have returned from jihad in Syria describe the Arab Spring as a miracle-a divine intervention that called upon them to radically change their lives. From one day to the next, they turned towards God and decided to travel to the Middle East to take up arms. According to the interlocutors, the miracle of the Arab Spring made them wake up to find themselves as part of the Muslim umma-the community of the last prophet Mohammed-that…

  • Omar is dead

    A Kublitz•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2021•Citada por: 6•Referências: 18

The article investigates the effects of a terror attack in Copenhagen and the subsequent escalating anti-radicalization business. On February 15, 2015, Omar el-Hussein was shot dead by the Danish police. Earlier that day, Omar el-Hussein had killed two people: a Jewish guard in front of a synagogue and a participant in a cultural event on freedom of speech. A few days later, the government adopted the largest (counter-) terrorism package in the h…

  • Escalations

    Open Access•Lars Højer, A Kublitz et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Theory•2018•Citada por: 16•Referências: 57

In this article, we explore what happens in qualitative terms when a social phenomenon accelerates in quantitative terms. We do so by introducing escalation as an analytical concept through which to understand sudden processes of accelerating change. Using the Danish cartoon controversy as the ethnographic prism, we show that accelerating dynamics may not only imply the quantitative growth of "things" but also that the qualitative scales underpin…

  • From Revolutionaries to Muslims

    Open Access•A Kublitz•ARTICLE•International Journal Middle East…•2016•Citada por: 12•Referências: 38

Exploring generational changes and continuities among Palestinian families in Denmark, this article investigates why the children of the fidāɔīn (fighters) and many of the fidāɔīn themselves have turned their backs on secular politics and embraced Islam. The Palestinians who arrived in Denmark from Lebanon in the wake of the Lebanese Civil War were members of the Palestinian Liberation Organization and were known as the generation of the revoluti…

  • The Ongoing Catastrophe

    A Kublitz•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2015•Citada por: 13•Referências: 9

The majority of Palestinians in Denmark have followed a route from villages in Palestine via camps in Lebanon to housing projects in Denmark. Whereas it is well known that the camps were modelled after the villages, it is less well known that the housing projects are referred to and enacted as camps. Based on fieldwork among Palestinians in the Danish camps, this article explores why my interlocutors describe their current lives as a catastrophe.…

  • The Cartoon Controversy

    Open Access•A Kublitz•ARTICLE•Social Analysis•2010

This article offers a situational analysis of the printing of cartoons about the Islamic Prophet in a Danish newspaper in 2005 and the ensuing demonstration by Danish Muslims. It suggests that rather than simply sparking protests, the 'cartoon controversy' created a space for possible actions and a political platform for Muslims all over the world. Based on a review of the historical development of the national Danish discourse on immigrants, the…
