In Memoriam
Georgette Magassy Dorn is fondly remembered as the longest serving and most effective head of the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress. She was contagiously extroverted, boundlessly energetic, enviously effective, immensely informed across several professional disciplines, unusually helpful in every respect, and exceptionally conversant in several languages.
A P ioneer in C aribbean H istory
Lillian: Let's start with you telling a little about yourself. Franklin: I was born in 1942 in Jamaica. I went to elementary school, of course, and took the mandatory “Eleven-Plus” general examination in 1953. I then left elementary school and for a year attended a small private high school with my two older brothers. The school system was a little different from the United States. I know that well, because when I came here and told a group of Wi…

The Impact of the Congress of Vienna on Caribbean Politics and Society
For the hundreds of international delegates gathered at Vienna two hundred years ago, the focus of attention was, understandably, (as we have heard so many times,) the reconstitution of the European political frontiers severely altered during the French Revolutionary military campaigns between 1794 and 1814. The Napoleonic changes affected far more than just geographical boundaries and nominal administrations. There was also a major change in gen…

The Problem of Slavery as History
Its inordinate reliance on the published works of David Brion Davis betrays the fact that this book had its genesis in a series of lectures at the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery at Yale University. Davis investigated the problem of slavery over the past two millennia. In four relatively short but exceedingly convoluted chapters, Joseph C. Miller reviews some 22,000 years of human history to make a great number of questionable asse…

Changing the Imperial Guard in the Caribbean
This is a simply superb study of an unusually complex subject, or rather, a number of overlapping and interrelated themes. Nevertheless, the author weaves an attractively coherent and highly persuasive multidimensional narrative with consummate skill and exemplary literary flourish. The achievement is stunningly monumental and the contribution to several academic fields singularly impressive. Reading like a fast-paced novel, Professor Parker care…

Maroon communities in the circum-Caribbean
Maroon societies consisted of runaway slaves and their offspring who sequestered themselves in the circum-Caribbean wilderness.1 The existence of Maroons manifested the opposition of some African slaves to their enslavement and a persistent desire to create a free society of their own. In the Western hemisphere, Maroon societies emerged virtually whenever and wherever a slave population existed. None the less, at any given time, Maroons comprised…
The disintegration of the Caribbean slave systems, 1772–1886
Slavery remained such an integral aspect of Western society for so many centuries that it could not be easily nor willingly dismantled. Having been part and parcel of the expansion of Europeans into the American hemisphere, slavery remained firmly embedded in all the resultant social, political and economic systems. Throughout its history the concept of slavery had been a controversial one, yet no generalized opposition to the deplorable institut…
