  • Modelling Local Strontium Isotope Baselines from Human Isotopic Data Using Machine Learning

Open Access•Samuel Kertes, Alžběta Danielisová et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Method…•2027

Estimating bioavailable strontium isotope baselines is a critical step in archaeological mobility studies. Conventional proxy-based approaches, which rely on environmental samples, such as soils, fauna, plants, or waters, are not always feasible and may be affected by environmental, taphonomic, or sampling-related biases. Here, we introduce MobSr, a machine-learning-based model designed to estimate probable local 87 Sr/ 86 Sr baselines directly f…

  • The Origins of Viking Age Dogs in Luistari, Eura, Finland

Open Access•Ulla Nordfors, Alžběta Danielisová et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•Referências: 12

We used stable (δ 18 O) and radiogenic ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) isotopic proxies to investigate the origins of dogs ( Canis familiaris ) buried in Viking Age graves at Luistari, Finland. While all 13 dogs exhibited oxygen isotope values compatible with local surface waters, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios for two of the four dogs analyzed (graves 289 and 480) were compatible with a likely origin in southern Scandinavia. The findings align with previous evidence of th…

  • Multi-isotopic evidence reveals the emergence of a cosmopolitan community at the Luistari cemetery in Eura, Finland, during the early Medieval period (600–1130 CE)

    Open Access•Alžběta Danielisová, Ulla Nordfors et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025•Citada por: 4•Referências: 72

This study examines the role of the Eura region as a nexus linking the inland with Baltic Sea trade routes. Luistari cemetery, spanning from the early Merovingian to Medieval periods, provides key insights into South-Western Finland’s socio-economic structure and communication networks. Despite its significance, this burial community’s chronological dynamics and regional role remain poorly understood. Using multi-isotopic evidence contextualised …

  • The use of strontium isotopes ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) to determine the geographic assignment based on keratin values of shed skins of green pythons ( Morelia viridis ) as an effective tool against wildlife cr…

Open Access•Jakub Trubač, Lukáš Ackerman et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025

The green tree python is quite a favorite pet for sale on the international market. The species is therefore protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES). Since the illegal poaching of large numbers of specimens in the wild might lead to the detriment of native populations, and wildlife breeding farms were found to be serving as conduits to funnel wild-caught green tree pythons out of In…

  • Mobility and community at Mesolithic Lake Onega, Karelia, north-west Russia

    Open Access•Rebekka Eckelmann, Laura Arppe et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 95

This study investigates the underlying mechanisms driving the formation of the largest known burial site of the Northern European Mesolithic, Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov (YOO). Radiogenic strontium isotope analysis (87Sr/86Sr) was used to identify group dynamics within the cemetery and examine the site's place within local and supra-regional networks. The analysis of 57 humans and 31 animals was supported by the creation of an environmental baseline wh…

  • The first collective Neolithic megalithic tomb in Oman

Open Access•Alžběta Danielisová, Maria Pia Maiorano et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•Referências: 5

A newly discovered grave in Wadi Nafūn, Oman, features a unique burial structure, combining monumental architecture and the collective deposition of human remains from multiple Neolithic groups. Detailed analysis of the burial community reveals new insights into Neolithic rituals and subsistence strategies during the Holocene Humid Period in southern Arabia
