Accounting for the absent presence of war in Simone de Beauvoir’s novel She Came to Stay , this article argues that Beauvoir’s literary aesthetic for engaged literature suggests the novel may be read as an existentialist protest novel evoking a collective act of resistance. Political solidarity cannot be practiced by an individual in isolation; it characterizes groups, both as a descriptive and as a normative concept. But what are the boundaries of the solidaristic group? After exploring the relationship between solidarity and human rights, I argue that, when considering civic solidarity, the right to solidarity as a human right may be understood as the negative right not to be hindered by social vulnerabilities in the exercise of citizen rights.
