Advancing rural cancer control
PURPOSE: Given well-documented rural-urban disparities in cancer outcomes, we conducted a portfolio analysis to characterize rural cancer control-focused grants funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) between fiscal years 2016 and 2024 and to identify opportunities for future research. METHODS: ISearch, an NIH portfolio analysis tool, was used to identify rural-focused cancer control research grants funded by NCI. 128 grants were analyzed f…

Transdisciplinary Cardiovascular and Cancer Health Disparities Training
The Centers for Population Health and Health Disparities program promotes multilevel and multifactorial health equity research and the building of research teams that are transdisciplinary. We summarized 5 areas of scientific training for empowering the next generation of health disparities investigators with research methods and skills that are needed to solve disparities and inequalities in cancer and cardiovascular disease. These areas include…

Approaching Health Disparities From a Population Perspective
Addressing health disparities has been a national challenge for decades. The National Institutes of Health-sponsored Centers for Population Health and Health Disparities are the first federal initiative to support transdisciplinary multilevel research on the determinants of health disparities. Their novel research approach combines population, clinical, and basic science to elucidate the complex determinants of health disparities. The centers are…
Beyond ethnic match
This study examined the outcome effects of cognitive match between Asian and White outpatient clients and their therapists. Many clinicians believe that one hindrance to the treatment of ethnic minority clients is that therapists and clients may not share common assumptions and attitudes about therapy and about the problems that are presented in treatment. The study investigated client–therapist similarity in their perceptions of the presenting p…
Creating Healthy Communities, Healthy Homes, Healthy People
Mounting evidence suggests physical and mental health problems relate to the built environment, including human-modified places such as homes, schools, workplaces, parks, industrial areas, farms, roads and highways. The public health relevance of the built environment requires examination. Preliminary research demonstrates the health benefits of sustainable communities. However, the impact of mediating and moderating factors within the built envi…
Being Indian," "Being American
This is a cross-cultural study that seeks to understand an aspect of Asian Indian women's realities by exploring concepts such as: attitudes toward gender roles, level of stress in their lives, and their ethnic identity. It compares Asian Indian women raised in the U.S. (n = 45), with women born and raised in India (n = 50) and with European American women in the U.S. (n = 50). Additionally, excerpts from in-depth interviews with Asian Indian wom…
HIV Risk Among Homosexual, Bisexual, and Heterosexual Male and Female Youths
Timing of HIV Interventions on Reductions in Sexual Risk Among Adolescents
Examined the effectiveness of an HIV intervention program among 151 adolescents ages 13 to 24 years who were randomly assigned to (a) seven sessions of 1.5 hr each (10.5 hr); (b) three sessions of 3.5 hr each (10.5 hr); or (c) a no‐intervention condition. Using cognitive‐behavioral intervention strategies, social skills and HIV‐related beliefs, perceptions, and norms were targeted in both the three‐ and seven‐session, small‐group intervention con…
A brief HIV intervention for adolescents and young adults
The delivery format of an HIV prevention program that had been efficacious with youths at high risk was modified from seven relatively short sessions over a one- to two-month period to three longer sessions over a one- to two-week period. In contrast to youths in the seven-session program, no change in sexual behavior was observed among those in the redesigned program at three-month follow-up. However, change was apparent in the mediators of high…
