The Ethical Requirements of Mathematics Education Scholarship in an Unethical Time
The purpose of this editorial is to consider pathways for doing that work by building on research this journal has previously published. The goal is to offer a vision for creating research that contributes to a gentler, more just, and more curious world, through an argument grounded in a small set of mentor texts.
‘There’s just no way’
As part of a statewide initiative to shift elementary mathematics teaching in Michigan toward more child-centered instruction, teachers overwhelmingly reported that a major obstacle to improving their practice was time. Through interviews and videos of teaching, Kaellen Williams, Mallory Mattimore-Malan, and Amy Noelle Parks analyzed how teachers’ concerns about time shaped their experiences implementing pedagogies designed to center children’s t…
When the Clips Are Down
Historically, research about classroom management has been instrumental in nature. Although some studies have engaged a critical perspective, few have studied management from the perspectives of children. Through interviews with third-grade children, this study asked: How do third graders make sense of a "clip chart" classroom management system in relation to themselves and their classmates? Findings provide insights into how management practices…
Examining Certification Requirements in Early Math and Literacy
The purpose of this study was to examine preK certification requirements for literacy and mathematics coursework to understand policy trends across the United States. We were interested in examining whether teacher certification requirements in these content areas align with expectations for child outcomes in early literacy and math. We completed a content analysis of 114 documents from 50 states including preK teacher certification requirements …
Centering Children in Mathematics Education Classroom Research
Drawing on a 3-year interpretive study that followed a cohort of children from prekindergarten to Grade 1, this article presents results of a multiple case study, which demonstrated that although two children had the same teachers, classmates, and curricula over 3 years, their experiences in the three successive mathematics classrooms were quite different from each other (although consistent for each child). The two focal children did not have eq…
Children, Mathematics, and Videotape
Despite the increased use of video for data collection, most research using assessment interviews in early childhood education relies solely upon the analysis of linguistic data, ignoring children’s bodies. This trend is particularly troubling in studies of marginalized children because transcripts limited to language can make it difficult to analyze embodied power relations between majority researchers and minority children. This article respond…
