  • The importance of wage loss in the financial burden of illness

    Open Access•Aditya Shrinivas, Suhani Jalota et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 35

Wage loss accounts for a substantial share of the total economic burden of illness in India - and disproportionately so among the poorest households. Our findings imply that if UHC is to achieve its objective of protecting households against the financial risk of illness - particularly poor households, the inclusion of wage loss insurance or another illness-related income replacement benefit is needed

  • Does Management Matter? Evidence from India

Nena Bloom, Nicholas Bloom et al.•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2013

A long-standing question is whether differences in management practices across firms can explain differences in productivity, especially in developing countries where these spreads appear particularly large. To investigate this, we ran a management field experiment on large Indian textile firms. We provided free consulting on management practices to randomly chosen treatment plants and compared their performance to a set of control plants. We fin…

We construct an individual-level data set of partnership contracts in late-nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro to study the determinants of contract terms. Partners with limited liability contributed more capital and received lower draws for private expenses and lower profit shares than their unlimited partners. Unlimited partners in turn received higher-powered incentives when they contracted with limited partners than when they contracted with un…

  • Estimating Price Elasticities with Nonlinear Errors in Variables

Anoop Mahajan, Aprajit Mahajan•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2009

This paper estimates a price elasticity using a flexible demand specification on survey data where prices are observed with errors and are correlated with household characteristics. The demand function is modeled as a polynomial/trigonometric in the unobserved true prices, and the form of the dependency between the observed prices and household characteristics is modeled parametrically. I identify and estimate the model by adapting the approach o…

  • Child Nutrition in India in the Nineties

Alessandro Tarozzi, Anoop Mahajan et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2007•Citada por: 9•Referências: 24

India experienced several years of fast economic growth during the 1990s, and according to many observers this period also saw a considerable decline in poverty, especially in urban areas. We use data from two rounds of the National Family and Health Survey to evaluate changes in nutritional status between 1992–93 and 1998–99 among children ages 0–3. We find that measures of short‐term nutritional status based on weight given height show large im…
