  • Facilitators and barriers along the pathways from secondary school to medical programmes- results from a national longitudinal study in Aotearoa New Zealand

Open Access•Sarah Randal, Tim J Wilkinson et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Health Sciences…•2026

Secondary school academic achievement is the most predictive measure for successful medical school selection, followed by aptitude tests and, to a lesser extent, interviews. Despite extensive research on medical student selection, little is known about the factors influencing the pathway to medical school prior to the selection process. This study aimed to identify changeable facilitators and barriers along the pathway from secondary school to me…

  • Preventing the Abuse and Misuse of Over-the-Counter Medicines

    Boaz Shulruf, Juha-Pekka Oinas et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2024

In total, 442 responses were received. Most respondents strongly agreed (Md all = 5) that OTC medicines could be abused or misused; pharmacy owners were more likely to strongly agree than pharmacists ( p = 0.012). Pharmacy owners were more likely to think that laxatives were liable for abuse than dispensers ( p = 0.008), and that travel sickness medicines were liable for misuse than dispensers ( p p = 0.013). Patient counseling was the most commo…

  • Cooperative learning in physical education lessons - literature review

Open Access•Sima Zach, Ella Shoval et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2023

Cooperative learning in physical education classes is perceived as beneficial. The aim of this article was to examine whether field studies that include cooperative learning in their physical education intervention programs provide applicable data—to allow teachers to choose the optimal teaching strategy in line with their teaching goals. A systematic review of 44 research studies, published between 2000 and 2020, was conducted. Data related to t…

  • Trust and risk pitfalls in medical education

Arvin Damodaran, Philip Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2021

PURPOSE: Learning opportunities in teaching hospitals are gated by clinical teachers. One way to unpack their decision-making is to employ a 'trust and risk' model. This study aimed to uncover clinical teachers' experience of trust, risk and vulnerability as they participate in medical education. METHODS: Hospital-based clinical teachers were interviewed about trust, risk and vulnerability in medical education. Data analysis was undertaken using …

Open Access•Ben Dyson, Jackie Cowan et al.•ARTICLE•European Physical Education Review•2017•Citada por: 5•Referências: 4

Whilst globally there has been a great deal of discussion and rhetoric regarding the state of physical education at the primary level, there is a paucity of evidence regarding teachers’ perceptions of quality physical education in practice. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to explore and interpret primary school teachers’ perceptions of physical education in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) and identify the influence(s) of education, sport an…

  • The Objective Borderline Method

Boaz Shulruf, Phillippa Poole et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2015

A new probability-based standard setting technique, the Objective Borderline Method (OBM), was introduced recently. This was based on a mathematical model of how test scores relate to student ability. The present study refined the model and tested it using 2500 simulated data-sets. The OBM was feasible to use. On average, the OBM performed well with specificity .88, sensitivity .51, false positive rate 3.4% and false negative rate 26%. These indi…

  • Measuring Collectivism and Individualism in the Third Millennium

Open Access•Boaz Shulruf, Marianna Alesi et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2011

The aim in this study was to validate the Auckland Individualism-Collectivism Scale (AICS) across populations from 5 different countries and identify better ways to interpret the scores. Data were collected from New Zealand, Portugal, China, Italy, and Romania. The results indicate that the AICS is not only valid but also highly reliable (α > .70). Cluster analysis identified 4 clusters: low collectivism – high individualism; high collectivism – …

  • Student pathways at the university

Sarah Tumen, Boaz Shulruf et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2008•Citada por: 3•Referências: 1

This article outlines a longitudinal pathway analysis of student performance within educational institutions, so as to identify student profiles which describe those groups of students who are more likely to complete or leave a bachelor degree program, and to identify the predictors for these outcomes. The analyses are based on 7314 undergraduate student enrolment and completion data, covering the period from 2001 to 2005, from a large metropolit…

  • The effect of student loan schemes on students returning to study

Sarah Tumen, Boaz Shulruf•ARTICLE•Journal of Higher Education…•2008•Citada por: 3•Referências: 8

In this paper populations of students returning to tertiary study in the period 1997–2005 have been compared with the population of non‐returning students who had the same opportunity to return. Such comparisons were conducted for students who returned after a break of 1–7 years (seven comparison groups). Students with the highest likelihood of returning were found to be: (i) students who had an outstanding student loan prior to their return that…
