Contingencies in Urban Future-Making
Exceptional architecture, learning processes, and the contradictory performativity of norms and standards
Large-scale urban projects that make use of exceptional architecture face a number of challenges: namely the scale and complexity of the projects as well as the elevated expectations faced by architectural and engineering firms. Meeting these challenges requires the development and approval of non-standard design and technical solutions. Based on the analysis of four case studies in the German context, we show how the creation of exceptional arch…
Assisted Self-help Housing in Mexico
This article examines forms of housing finance that offer poor households opportunities for sourcing resources for construction work through non-mortgage microloans. In Mexico, these housing microfinance schemes have recently been incorporated into national housing policies. On a global level, the past 10 to 15 years have seen the emergence of institutional investment in microfinance. I reflect on these processes in this article by bringing criti…
Standards and SSOs in the contested widening and deepening of financial markets
Particularly since the financial crisis of 2008, much has been written about the growing influence of finance in the development of cities in the global North. Today, financial markets also appear to be expanding southwards. A small but growing number of existing studies on the financialization of Southern cities helpfully explore how international investment changes urban development locally. Yet, they say less about the actors, procedures, and …
Labour migration as a temporal practice in peripheral cities
Comăneşti, a small town in Romania’s Moldova region, has been significantly affected by migration to Western Europe over the last decades. Yet, the development of the city cannot fully be grasped with the notion of ‘shrinking’. As migration is often temporary and as migrants maintain multiple ties with their place of origin, they rather forge a specific temporality of urban development that is shaped by rhythms of absence and presence; that is or…
Urban megaprojects, nation-state politics and regulatory capitalism in Central and Eastern Europe
In this paper, we explore how state-led regulatory planning is utilised to push for delivery of an urban megaproject (UMP) in the specific context of post-socialist Central and Eastern Europe. Our focus is on the large-scale brownfield redevelopment project ‘Belgrade Waterfront’ under implementation in the Serbian capital, a joint venture between the Republic of Serbia and Abu Dhabi-based investor Eagle Hills. We show this UMP to be an extreme ex…
In search of authenticity
This paper critically examines the role of the architectural vernacular in the discourse about socially engaged architectures in the context of the metropolises of the Global South. Design practitioners and theorists currently seek to improve the livelihoods of households in informal settlements through architectural projects and design interventions, which claim to be socially engaged. Such projects and interventions are often presented as simul…
Designed to improve
Debates on the so-called social turn in architecture and design have in the last decade (again) increasingly turned to reflect on the disciplines’ contributions to current societal challenges, arch
Circulating knowledge, marketization and norm‐making
In this article, I explore how international actors in the development of real estate projects affect building practices in local markets. The focus is on the dynamics of interaction and exchange of knowledge between the disciplines of architecture and construction. Using the German ECE group and its expansion in the region as a case study, I look at shopping centre development in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) over the past two decades. I seek…
Transnational building practices
Architecture and urban planning have always been subject to, and affected by, processes of transnational cultural exchange and professional networking. Yet, the modes and geographies of knowledge mobility in urban development have matured in the last two decades, with various forces resulting in forms of transnational learning that are faster, more frequent and have more impact. The articles in this special issue provide an important contribution…
Architecture, Economic Imaginaries and Urban Politics
In recent studies on the role of architecture in urban restructuring, city marketing and the related struggles for meaning, there has been a focus on high-profile architects and iconic architecture. In this article I wish to examine architecture and building types as 'socially signifying devices', in order to take more everyday buildings and their images into account as well. UsingVienna as a case study, I explore how the commercial office tower …
