  • Public Trust in Environmental Decision-Making

Stewart Fast, Laura Nourallah•ARTICLE•Case Studies in the Environment•2018

The existence of trust and confidence in public authorities and in the rules and the outcomes of environmental and other regulatory assessment processes is highly important. This case examines a region that was overwhelmingly distrustful of public authorities making decisions about shale gas development. Kent County is a rural area in New Brunswick, Canada, featuring coastal and inland villages and a unique mix of three cultures (Mi’kmaq, Acadian…

  • Social license to operate

    Open Access•J Gehman, Lianne Lefsrud et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Administration•2017•Citada por: 53•Referências: 18

Drunks are accorded great social license in Oaxacan villages. They may shout insults, intrude uninvited into social gatherings, and behave in other normally unacceptable ways... [A]pparent inebriation serves to define a crucial role in village life: the licensed drunk pierces the elaborate information control devices of the community and provides the barefaced facts and opinions which normally go unspoken (Dennis 1975: 856, 862). We combine a socio‐cultural and economic approach to investigate how wind turbines change the manner in which rural landscapes are valued. Interviews with residents of communities hosting wind projects on the shores of eastern Lake Ontario reveal two main impressions of landscape change: one is to see turbines as irrevocably industrializing and thereby ruining the peace and quiet of rural life and the second downplays visual concerns as negligibl…

    Open Access•Stewart Fast•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2015•Citada por: 2•Referências: 34

This study contributes to fuller understandings of the tensions in wind energy planning and politics. Through a q-method analysis of wind energy supporter and opponent discourses in communities hosting both proposed and constructed projects it extends the literature in three main ways. First, this study responds to the need for more nuanced understandings of wind energy supporter perspectives. It identifies and contrasts an impatient supporter wi…

  • Social Acceptance of Renewable Energy

    Open Access•Stewart Fast•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2013•Citada por: 14•Referências: 52

As global production of energy from renewable sources has grown over the last 25 years, so too has research on social acceptance of renewable energy. This article reports findings from a systematic review of peer‐reviewed articles related to this subject. There has been a rapid increase in the frequency of these studies and a shift in orientation away from market and socio‐political measures of securing policy support for renewables toward a symp…
