The Water Insecurity Experiences (Wise) Scales are suitable for use in high-income settings
The Water Insecurity Experiences Scales are validated tools for reliably and comparably assessing experiences with water access and use in low- and middle-income countries. Although theoretically applicable in high-income countries, their performance in these settings has not been assessed. This study therefore examined whether the Water Insecurity Experiences Scales function similarly in high-income countries, and if they generated measures comp…

Aligning green infrastructure to sustainable development
Blue and green infrastructure (BGI) is increasingly viewed as a promising solution to promoting a shift beyond traditionally engineered “grey” approaches towards more socially and environmentally sustainable infrastructure systems. The specific insights of geographical scholarship on how to address issues of processes, scale, and place in BGI design, implementation, and long‐term management would help unlock the potential for BGI to be appropriat…

Reconnecting society with its ecological roots
Water borrowing is consistently practiced globally and is associated with water-related system failures across diverse environments
Water problems due to scarcity, inaccessibility, or poor quality are a major barrier to household functioning, livelihood, and health globally. Household-to-household water borrowing has been posited as a strategy to alleviate unmet water needs. However, the prevalence and predictors of this practice have not been systematically examined. Therefore, we tested whether water borrowing occurs across diverse global contexts with varying water problem…
The role of ecosystems in mitigation and management of Covid-19 and other zoonoses
There is rising international concern about the zoonotic origins of many global pandemics. Increasing human-animal interactions are perceived as driving factors in pathogen transfer, emphasising the close relationships between human, animal and environmental health. Contemporary livelihood and market patterns tend to degrade ecosystems and their services, driving a cycle of degradation in increasingly tightly linked socio-ecological systems. This…

Geographical and Temporal Dimensions of Bulgarian Attitudes towards the Rural Environment
This paper explores certain dimensions of the transformation since 1989 in attitudes towards the environment in one largely rural locality of southwest Bulgaria. There is something of a paradox apparent in rural attitudes and behaviours to the environment: nakedly expropriative on the one hand whilst simultaneously deeply concerned and celebratory on the other. Exploration of this apparent paradox is the primary objective of this paper. The autho…

Towards a critical political ecology of human–forest interactions
This paper presents a critical political ecology of human–forest interactions in a Bulgarian locality. Based on primary fieldwork carried out annually since 1992, the argument is advanced that even in a relatively small space, environment–society relationships are sufficiently complex to make the enterprises of empirical analysis and theory‐building quite challenging. Yet, as this case study of informal resource use practices shows, it is precise…
The Complicity of Trees
This article presents a critical political ecology of the various forms of tree theft in a Bulgarian locality. Based on primary fieldwork carried out almost annually since 1992, Chad Staddon argues that even in a relatively tightly bounded space such as a single locality or forest stand, environment-society relationships are sufficiently complex to make the enterprises of analysis and theory-building quite challenging. Yet, as this case study of …
Towards a Political Ecology of Oil in Post-communist Georgia
Since 1998 the growing importance of the Caspian Sea's oil reserves for the international markets has put a new pressure on Georgia's energy transit capacities. One of the new transit facilities – the Kulevi Oil Terminal located on the country's ecologically-sensitive central Black Sea coast - has emerged as a controversial development evoking several cross-cutting environmental policy, economic and political conflicts at the international, natio…

The Hidden Histories and Geographies of Neotraditional Town Planning
The neotraditional resort development of Seaside, Florida merits special attention from geographers and urban planners because of the normative claims made by its designers and because it has garnered widespread attention from practising architects, planners, anti social critics, Under the banners of 'neotraditionalism' and 'community planning' the principles implemented in Seaside have also been employed in numerous other developments in North A…

Localities, Natural Resources and Transition in Eastern Europe
This paper develops the claim that an emergent 'transition model of development' is resulting in the (re)marginalization of rural localities in post-communist countries. The specific case study of local development in a rural Bulgarian locality, since 1989, illustrates some of the ways in which this new model of development is combining elements of the communist and pre-communist development models alongside incipient market-capitalist relations.…
