  • Osseous talocalcaneal coalition in a medieval skeleton (ca. 1050 AD)

Open Access•Maria Ines Hofmann, Thomas Böni et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2010•Citada por: 1•Referências: 22

Tarsal coalition (TC) is defined as an abnormal fusion of two or more tarsal bones. The fusion may be fibrous, cartilaginous or osseous and can be congenital or acquired in response to infection, articular disorders, trauma, neoplasm or surgery. We report a case of a talocalcaneal (TCC) type of tarsal coalition in a medieval skeleton from Northwest Germany dating to ca. 1050 AD. The fusion is of osseous type. Plain AP radiographs and computed tom…

  • Paleopathologies of the Vertebral Column in Medieval Skeletons

Maria Ines Hofmann, Thomas Böni et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2008•Citada por: 4

Paleopathological data provide valuable information about health, longevity and mortality in earlier human populations. We investigated the incidence of spinal pathologies on 54 individuals (1045 vertebrae and 18 sacral bones) that belong to a medieval skeletal series discovered in the Dalheim monastery (Northwest Germany) and compared them with contemporary and recent populations. The skeletons were analyzed with anthropological methods (sex and…

The aim of this article is to briefly present the Galler Collection, a little‐known historic Swiss bone reference series of high value for paleopathological research. The Galler Collection consists of approximately 600 mostly dry‐bone specimens of many major bone diseases dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Clinical information and autopsy reports are available for the majority of specimens. Rarely documented conditions represente…

The aim of this paper was to demonstrate the application of computerized tomographic (CT)‐guided biopsy in a paleopathological examination. Researchers dealing with such special tasks should be aware of this method. We performed a CT‐guided percutaneous biopsy of an ancient Egyptian child mummy, which allowed us to revise its initial diagnosis. Based on this experience, extended preinterventional planning and the choice of equipment (needle type)…

  • Radiological aspects and interpretation of post‐mortem artefacts in ancient Egyptian mummies from Swiss collections

    Open Access•F J Rühli, Thomas Böni•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2000

The process of embalming leads to various post-mortem artefacts in ancient Egyptian mummies. Its different radiological aspects and its interpretation (historical background and intention) are demonstrated by way of example on two mummies belonging to Swiss collections (Naturwissenschaftliche Sammlungen der Stadt Winterthur, Winterthur; Musée d'Ethnographie, Neuchâtel). The human remains date from 900 bc and 300 bc, respectively, and have—among o…
