On Dating Archaeological Sites Evidencing Ferrous Metallurgy in the Southeastern Altai, Based on Radiocarbon and Dendrochronological Analyses of Charcoal
On Dating Archaeological Sites Evidencing Ferrous Metallurgy in the Southeastern Altai, based on Radiocarbon and Dendrochronological Analyses of Charcoal
This study examines the use of charcoal for dating iron-smelting furnaces in the southeastern Altai. Problems with using radiocarbon analysis in this case are connected with the accuracy of assessing the calendar age. Another important reason why the age of furnaces is overestimated is the “old wood” effect. This effect cannot be avoided by making radiocarbon dating of thin tree trunks (branches) from slag or by using the youngest radiocarbon dat…
A New Approach to the Study of Archaeological Charcoal
A New Approach to the Study of Archaeological Charcoal
In recent years, dendrochronological analysis in archaeology has undergone a substantial transformation, offering an opportunity to use samples of wood that were previously considered uninformative. One striking example is the analysis of charcoal excavated from archaeological sites. We have studied 448 samples of charcoal collected from metallurgical (iron smelting) furnaces in the Kurai and Chuya basins of the Russian Altai Mountains. Earlier m…
Middle Holocene Glacier Activity in the Russian Altai
The available paleosol and paleowood data from the head of the Akkol trough valley, South Chuya range, indicates a climatically driven glacier dynamic in the Russian Altai. Radiocarbon dating of paleosols and paleotree fragments help determine the beginning of the Neoglacial in this high mountain region in the middle of the Holocene. New data limit the advance of the Sofiysky glacier at that time by the front of the Historical moraine. Less so th…
Climatically driven late Pleistocene – Holocene hydrological system transformation and landscape evolution in the eastern periphery of Chuya basin, SE Altai, Russia
Lake systems in mountain borders of the Great Lakes Basin of Mongolia
Vanishing iron-smelting furnaces of the South Eastern Altai, Russia – Evidences for highly developed metallurgical production of ancient nomads
New Data on Iron-Smelting Sites in the Kuektanar and Turgun Valleys, Southeastern Altai
This paper presents the fi ndings relating to iron-smelting furnaces in the Kuektanar and Turgun valleys, which were part of the Chuya–Kurai metallurgical province in the Russian Altai, and are undergoing rapid erosion. On the Chuya, downstream of the Kuektanar mouth, hitherto unknown and completely eroded remains of furnaces were discovered. Radiocarbon dating of charcoal fragments from bloomeries at Kuektanar-1 and 2 and Turgun-1, using scintil…
Archaeological sites as markers of Neopleistocene-Holocene hydrological system transformation in the Kurai and Chuya basins, Southeastern Altai
Multidisciplinary studies using geomorphological, geoarchaeological, and geochronological approaches indicate contrasting environmental changes in southeastern Altai beginning from the Late Pleistocene. Twenty-eight new radiocarbon dates from the subaerial complex overlying Late Neopleistocene sediments in the high-altitude Kurai and Chuya basins confi rm the degradation of a single ice-dammed reservoir in that area during the Early Holocene. In …
Human occupation of South Eastern Altai highlands (Russia) in the context of environmental changes
Glacier dynamics, palaeohydrological changes and seismicity in southeastern Altai (Russia) and their influence on human occupation during the last 3000 years
