Mid- to late Holocene centennial-scale shifts of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly winds
Centennial-timescale variability of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly wind belt (SHW) is poorly documented, mainly due to a paucity of long, high-resolution climate records from the Southern Hemisphere. Moreover, the role played by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and solar variability in controlling the SHW is not well understood. We present a 7000-year record of grain size end-member modelling and C/N from Lak…
Synchronizing the Western Gotland Basin (Baltic Sea) and Lake Kälksjön (central Sweden) sediment records using common cosmogenic radionuclide production variations
Multi-archive studies of climate events and archive-specific response times require synchronous time scales. Aligning common variations in the cosmogenic radionuclide production rate via curve fitting methods provides a tool for the continuous synchronization of natural environmental archives down to decadal precision. Based on this approach, we synchronize 10 Be records from Western Gotland Basin (WGB, Baltic Sea) and Lake Kälksjön (KKJ, central…
Mediterranean-like “fall dump” events in the Baltic Sea
In the Mediterranean Sea, organic carbon-rich sapropels have been deposited periodically over the last fifteen million years. Some sapropels are characterized by high contents of the mat-forming, planktonic diatom Pseudosolenia calcar-avis and the planktonic diatom Thalassionema nitzschioides as a result of their mass sinking in autumn (the so-called “fall dump”). The present study shows that fall dump events also occurred in the brackish Baltic …
Paleoenvironmental study of the Late Preclassic period in the Northern Mesoamerican Frontier
The Northern Mesoamerican Frontier was a complex multicultural region characterized by frequent human settlement changes and shifts in agricultural conditions during the Late Preclassic period (~400 BCE-150 CE). Here, we report a high-resolution paleoenvironmental record from the varved sedimentary sequence of the crater maar La Alberca which spans the Late Preclassic (~400 BCE-150 CE) to part of the Early Classic period (~150 CE-250 CE) correspo…
The East Gotland Basin (Baltic Sea) as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series
The short sediment core EMB201/7-4 retrieved from the East Gotland Basin, central Baltic Sea, is explored here as a candidate to host the stratigraphical basis for the Anthropocene series and its equivalent Anthropocene epoch, still to be formalized in the Geological Time Scale. The core has been accurately dated back to 1840 CE using a well-established event stratigraphy approach. A pronounced and significant change occurs at 26.5 cm (dated 1956…
Environmental magnetism study during the Mid-Late Holocene transition and its cultural implications in Mesoamerica
Holocene sea-surface temperature variability in the Chilean fjord region
Here we provide three new Holocene (11–0 cal ka BP) alkenone-derived sea surface temperature (SST) records from the southernmost Chilean fjord region (50–53°S). SST estimates may be biased towards summer temperature in this region, as revealed by a large set of surface sediments. The Holocene records show consistently warmer than present-day SSTs except for the past ~ 0.6 cal ka BP. However, they do not exhibit an early Holocene temperature optim…
Vegetation and environmental changes in Northern Anatolia between 134 and 119 ka recorded in Black Sea Sediments
This multiproxy study on SE Black Sea sediments provides the first detailed reconstruction of vegetation and environmental history of Northern Anatolia between 134 and 119 ka. Here, the glacial–interglacial transition is characterized by several short-lived alternating cold and warm events preceding a meltwater pulse (~ 130.4–131.7 ka). The latter is reconstructed as a cold arid period correlated to Heinrich event 11. The initial warming is evide…
North Atlantic control on precipitation pattern in the eastern Mediterranean/Black Sea region during the last glacial
Based on proxy records from western Black Sea cores, we provide a comprehensive study of climate change during the last glacial maximum and late-glacial period in the Black Sea region. For the first time we present a record of relative changes in precipitation for NW Anatolia based on variations in the terrigenous supply expressed as detrital carbonate concentration. The good correspondence between reconstructed rainfall intensity in NW Anatolia …
A Pronounced Dry Event Recorded Around 4.2 ka in Brine Sediments from the Northern Red Sea
Partly laminated sediments were sampled from the brine-filled, anoxic Shaban Deep basin in the northern Red Sea. At about 4200 cal yr BP more than two millennia of anoxic sedimentation is replaced by a sub-oxic facies strongly suggesting the episodic absence of the brine. At the same time stable oxygen isotopes from surface dwelling foraminifera show a sharp increase (within less than 100 yr) pointing to a strong positive salinity anomaly at the …
Mediterranean Moisture Source for an Early-Holocene Humid Period in the Northern Red Sea
Paleosalinity and terrigenous sediment input changes reconstructed on two sediment cores from the northernmost Red Sea were used to infer hydrological changes at the southern margin of the Mediterranean climate zone during the Holocene. Between approximately 9.25 and 7.25 thousand years ago, about 3‰ reduced surface water salinities and enhanced fluvial sediment input suggest substantially higher rainfall and freshwater runoff, which thereafter d…
Correlated Millennial-Scale Changes in Surface Hydrography and Terrigenous Sediment Yield Inferred from Last-Glacial Marine Deposits off Northeastern Brazil
The stable isotope composition of planktonic foraminifera correlates with evidence for pulses of terrigenous sediment in a sediment core from the upper continental slope off northeastern Brazil. Stable oxygen isotope records of the planktonic foraminiferal species Globigerinoides sacculifer and Globigerinoides ruber (pink) reveal sub-Milankovitch changes in sea-surface hydrography during the last 85,000 yr. Warming of the surface water coincided …
