A Cultural Comparison of Personality Profiles of U.S. and Japanese Centenarians
The purpose of this study was a cross-cultural examination of centenarians’ personality through a person-centered approach to examine if there is a “resilient” personality profile consistent across cultures. Proxy reports information was obtained from family and close friends of 239 U.S. centenarians from the Georgia Centenarians Study and 272 Japanese centenarians from the Tokyo Centenarian Study. Latent profile analyses were conducted to identi…
Toward a Professional Development Model for Writing as a Digital, Participatory Process
In this formative experiment, the authors focused on developing professional development for upper elementary school teachers and investigating how it was integrated into teachers’ instruction to improve their ability to make writing a more digital, participatory process. Theoretical perspectives pertaining to technology use in education specify that this instruction should emphasize students creating rather than consuming information from media …
Linking early ADHD to adolescent and early adult outcomes among African Americans
Rurality and Ethnicity in Adolescent Physical Illness
Context and Purpose: This study's objectives are to: investigate potential additive and multiplicative influences of rurality and race/ethnicity on chronic physical illness in a nationally representative sample of youth; and examine intra‐Latino processes using a Latino sub‐sample. Specifically, we examine how rurality and individual psychosocial processes reflected by acculturation proxies (generational status and use of the English language at …
Advances in testing the statistical significance of mediation effects.
P. A. Frazier, A. P. Tix, and K. E. Barron (2004) highlighted a normal theory method popularized by R. M. Baron and D. A. Kenny (1986) for testing the statistical significance of indirect effects (i.e., mediator variables) in multiple regression contexts. However, simulation studies suggest that this method lacks statistical power relative to some other approaches. The authors describe an alternative developed by P. E. Shrout and N. Bolger (2002)…
Changes in family financial circumstances and the physical health of married and recently divorced mothers
Gendered Trajectories of Work Control and Health Outcomes in the Middle Years
Through understanding these processes, work can be better designed to promote positive health outcomes, minimize negative health outcomes, and allow for better formulation and more effective implementation of health promotional programs
Early Adversity and Later Health
The study demonstrates key mediating pathways in the intergenerational transmission of social adversity and also highlights the importance of improving both socioeconomic and health resources for adolescents
Neighborhood context and financial strain as predictors of marital interaction and marital quality in African American couples
Demographic characteristics, family financial strain, neighborhood–level economic disadvantage, and state of residence were tested as predictors of observed warmth, hostility, and self–reported marital quality. Participants were 202 married African American couples who resided in a range of neighborhood contexts. Neighborhood–level economic disadvantage predicted lower warmth during marital interactions, as did residence in the rural south. Consi…
