  • The Embrace

    Open Access•Zali Gurevitch, Z D Gurevitch•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1990•Citada por: 3•Referências: 3

This article develops the notion that non-distance is a constitutive element in human relations. • The Power of Not Understanding

    Open Access•Zali Gurevitch, Z D Gurevitch•ARTICLE•The Journal of Applied Behavioral…•1989

    Open Access•Zali Gurevitch, Z D Gurevitch•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•1989•Citada por: 8•Referências: 5

Whenever faces are engaged in a face-to-face conversation distance is evoked between them as a 'common dialogic space' that both connects and separates. Keeping the topic going 'holds' the separate parties together in an ongoing engagement. When the topic for some reason fails to hold, the gap b…

  • The Other Side of Dialogue

    Zali Gurevitch, Z D Gurevitch•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1988•Citada por: 23

The central assumption of phenomenological and related approaches holds that the possibility of mutual understanding and communication in interpersonal relations in contingent on the supposition of the sameness of self and other. Under this assumption, the otherness of the other is conceived as an obstacle to achieving mutual understanding. Thus, the categories of stranger and strangeness are not considered constitutive of interpersonal communica…
