  • Mind the gap

Open Access•Roberta Martina Zagarella, Sarah Bigi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Medical Education•2026

  • From Participation to Evidence

Open Access•Serena Barello, Michela Monaci et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2026

Health policies and public services are increasingly expected to be evidence‐based, equitable and accountable at the population level. Yet the forms of evidence most commonly prioritised in policy‐making often fall short of capturing how health risks, services and prevention strategies are experienced and navigated across social groups and communities. This gap contributes to persistent mismatches between policy intent and lived social realities,…

  • Defining advocacy in public health

Open Access•Michela Monaci, Marko Korenjak et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2026

Advocacy is widely recognized as a catalyst for equity in health, yet its conceptual foundations, operational forms, and evaluative criteria remain fragmented. In health systems, advocacy is expected to amplify marginalized voices, address structural determinants, and promote participatory governance, but there is limited consensus on its definition and implementation. This scoping review systematically maps how advocacy has been conceptualized, …

  • Early palliative care for solid and blood cancer patients and caregivers

Open Access•Sarah Bigi, Eleonora Borelli et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction: Cancer patients and their caregivers have substantial unmet needs, that negatively impact the clinical outcome and quality of life. However, interventions aimed to address such needs are still suboptimal, failing to answer the recent healthcare call for the adoption of value-based models of care. In the case of incurable oncologic and hematologic cancers, a value-based model of care should plan advanced care on patients' needs and i…

  • Dialogical functions of metaphors in medical interactions

Maria Grazia Rossi, Fabrizio Macagno et al.•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2021

This paper proposes a method for analyzing the dialogical functions of metaphors in communicative interactions, and more specifically in the context of medical interviews. The dialogical goals proposed and pursued by the interlocutors are coded using a coding scheme that captures seven mutually exclusive categories of dialogical moves. The functions of the moves, including metaphors, can be identified and correlated with other variables relevant …

  • Understanding misunderstandings. Presuppositions and presumptions in doctor-patient chronic care consultations

    Fabrizio Macagno, Sarah Bigi•ARTICLE•Intercultural Pragmatics•2017•Citada por: 2•Referências: 6

Pragmatic presupposition is analyzed as grounded on an implicit reasoning process based on a set of presumptions, which can define cultural differences. The basic condition for presupposing a proposition is represented as a reasoning criterion, namely reasonableness. Presuppositions, on this view, need to be reasonable, namely they need to be the reasonable conclusions of an underlying presumptive reasoning, which does not or may not contain cont…

  • Analyzing the pragmatic structure of dialogues

    Open Access•Fabrizio Macagno, Sarah Bigi•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies•2017•Citada por: 4•Referências: 36

In this article, we describe the notion of dialogue move intended as the minimal unit for the analysis of dialogues. We propose an approach to discourse analysis based on the pragmatic idea that the joint dialogical intentions are also co-constructed through the individual moves and the higher-order communicative intentions that the interlocutors pursue. In this view, our goal is to bring to light the pragmatic structure of a dialogue as a comple…
