The impact of a personal cancer diagnosis on adolescent and young adult cancer survivors' social connectedness
Adolescent/young adult cancer survivors (AYACS) are diagnosed with cancer between 15 and 39 years of age. Improving AYACS' survivorship quality is crucial-including improving social connectedness, a construct describing the quality, structure and function of social relationships. With better understanding of AYACS' social connectedness, network-based interventions can be developed to foster social health. This study explored how a personal cancer…
Adoption and Discontinuance of Innovation Packages
The past decades have seen growing interest and application of interventions targeting the change of multiple behaviors at once. We advance this work by using the diffusion of innovations theory (DOI) to consider constellations of behaviors as innovation packages: multiple innovations that are logically related, interdependent in their use or effects, and often promoted as a set (Rogers, 2003). In addition, we embraced DOI’s focus on behavioral d…
The Impact of Health Communication Research on Medical and Health Professional Education and Training
In this essay, we review how health communication scholarship has been translated into various communication skills trainings (CSTs), we present four case studies of how health communication research informed the development and implementation of specific CSTs, and we reflect on how we can productively define "impact" in looking back as well as looking forward within this line of research
Extending the Theory of Normative Social Behavior
Novel, public behaviors, such as masking, should be susceptible to normative influence. This paper advances the theory of normative social behavior by considering a new set of moderators of normative influence — superdiffuser traits — and by clarifying the antecedents and consequences of exposure to collective norms. We use data from a two-wave survey of a cohort living in one U.S. county during the pandemic (N = 913) to assess normative effects …

Perceptions and knowledge regarding the Covid-19 pandemic between U.S. and China
BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2, a new coronavirus first reported by China on December 31st, 2019, has led to a global health crisis that continues to challenge governments and public health organizations. Understanding COVID-19 knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) is key for informing messaging strategies to contain the pandemic. Cross-national studies (e.g.: comparing China to the U.S.) are needed to better understand how trans-cultural differences…
Longitudinal study of an emerging Covid-19 stigma
Mixed-methods Analysis of Adults Likely versus Unlikely to Get a Covid-19 Vaccination
Objectives: This mixed-methods study compared perspectives of those 'very likely' versus 'very unlikely' to receive a hypothetical COVID-19 vaccine. Methods: We used an explanatory, sequential, mixed- methods design to analyze quantitative data from a rural Pennsylvania sample. Of the 976 participants, 67 selected 'very unlikely' to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Responses to open-ended questions: "What worries you the most about the COVID 19 pandemic…
Communication Quality Analysis
Communication Quality Analysis (CQA) is a rigorous transcript-based coding method for assessing clinical communication quality. We compared the resource-intensive transcript-based version with a streamlined real-time version of the method with respect to feasibility, validity, reliability, and association with traditional measures of communication quality. Simulated conversations between 108 trainees and 12 standardized patients were assessed by …
Generating a New Outcome Variable Using Mixed Methods in a Randomized Controlled Trial
The use of mixed methods research in intervention trials mostly centers around using quantitative data to assess primary outcomes and qualitative data primarily for exploratory purposes, to supplement, and/or explain quantitative findings. We describe a novel mixed methods procedure that generates an integrated outcome variable used to reexamine unexpected findings that resulted from an advance care planning interventional randomized controlled t…
Community-based game intervention to improve South Asian Indian Americans’ engagement with advanced care planning
Objective: Advance care planning (ACP) allows individuals to express their preferences for medical treatment in the event that they become incapable of making their own decisions. This study assessed the efficacy of a conversation game intervention for increasing South Asian Indian Americans' (SAIAs') engagement in ACP behaviors as well as the game's acceptability and cultural appropriateness among SAIAs. Design: Eligible community-dwelling SAIAs…
Low quality of dying and death in patients with septic shock as perceived by nurses and resident physicians
Septic shock is a disease with both high prevalence and mortality. Few studies have evaluated the quality of dying and death (QODD) in patients with septic shock. The authors compared the QODD of patients who died of septic shock versus other causes. They prospectively collected QODD surveys from nurses and residents caring for 196 patients who died in the medical intensive care unit (ICU) at an urban, university hospital. Patients were included …
Factors Affecting Code Status in a University Hospital Intensive Care Unit
The authors collected data on diagnosis, hospital course, and end-of life preparedness in patients who died in the intensive care unit (ICU) with '"full code" status (defined as receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation), compared with those who didn't. Differences were analyzed using binary and stepwise logistic regression. They found no differences in demographics, comorbidities, ventilator, hospital, or ICU days between groups. No-code patients …
