Toxic team climate
We identify the central role of toxic team climate in understanding dysfunctional work teams. We develop and test a model identifying team-level psychopathic personality and teamwork knowledge as proximal contributors to the creation of toxic team climates, which mediates the effects to create dysfunctional team outcomes. We also tested an alternative model that treats teamwork knowledge as a moderator of the relationship between team psychopathy…
Bias, Fairness, and Validity in Graduate-School Admissions
As many schools and departments are considering the removal of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) from their graduate-school admission processes to enhance equity and diversity in higher education, controversies arise. From a psychometric perspective, we see a critical need for clarifying the meanings of measurement “bias” and “fairness” to create common ground for constructive discussions within the field of psychology, higher education, and …
Rejoinder to Commentaries on Woo et al. (2022)
In this rejoinder, we discuss several areas of agreement as well as some noteworthy divergence in perspectives that are worth exploring further. We also note a few areas where immediate clarifications may be necessary. Next, we discuss practical solutions and challenges for improving the validity and fairness of graduate admissions. We conclude with a call for intellectual humility and openness in further advancing the field’s discussions on this…
Validity evidence and measurement equivalence for the Dutch translation of the conditional reasoning test for aggression
The Conditional Reasoning Test for Aggression (CRT‐A) indirectly measures the implicit motive to aggress by engaging respondents in inductive reasoning tasks. Most research involving the CRT‐A has been based on the original English version of the test with most data being collected in the United States. The purpose of the current paper is to evaluate the psychometric properties of a Dutch translation of this test and to examine if it could be use…
The handbook of multilevel theory, measurement, and analysis
This handbook provides guidance to organizational and social science scholars interested in pursuing multilevel research.\n\nOrganizational relationships are complex. Employees do their work as individuals, but also as members of larger teams. They exist within various social networks, both within and spanning organizations.\n\nMultilevel theory is at the core of the organizational sciences, and unpacking multilevel relationships is fundamental t…
The Dark Triad and Workplace Behavior
Over the last 15 years, there has been growing fascination among scholars in studying “dark behaviors” and “dark traits,” especially as they are expressed in organizational contexts. One taxonomy of dark traits that has garnered special interest is the dark triad (DT), which is comprised of three toxic and malevolent traits: psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism. This chapter offers a review of DT research, with a particular focus on rese…

Destructive Leadership
In this article, we propose a framework for understanding destructive leadership that summarizes the extant destructive leadership research and extends it in new directions. By reviewing the current literature on destructive leadership and drawing on organizational leadership theory and the more general research on deviant behaviors in organizations, we identify the underlying features and mechanisms that define destructive leadership. Recognizin…
The dark side of personality at work
Although there has been increasing interest in dark personality traits in the organizational sciences, these characteristics remain relatively understudied and somewhat misunderstood. The present manuscript aims to clarify some of the issues surrounding dark personality traits by discussing the history of dark personality traits, how they relate to normal personality traits, their relative importance as determinants of organizational outcomes, an…

Risk factors for sexual aggression in young men
There are many explanations for high rates of sexual aggression, with no one theory dominating the field. This study extends past research by evaluating an expanded version of the confluence model with a community sample. One‐hour audio computer‐assisted self‐interviews were completed by 470 young single men. Using structural equation analyses, delinquency, hostile masculinity, impersonal sex, and misperception of women's sexual cues were positiv…
Gender and Ethnicity Differences on the Abridged Big Five Circumplex (AB5C) of Personality Traits
The current study evaluates the measurement precision of the Abridged Big Five Circumplex (AB5C) of personality traits by identifying those items that demonstrate differential item functioning by gender and ethnicity. Differential item functioning is found in 33 of 45 (73%) of the AB5C scales, across gender and ethnic groups (Caucasian vs. African American). More differential item functioning is found by ethnic groups compared with gender groups.…
Belief in a Just World, Social Influence and Illness Attributions
Characteristics of individuals and illnesses can both influence receptivity to preventative health messages. We examined whether receptivity to health messages depends on interactions between illness characteristics and dispositional concern for justice. Participants considered the preventability of six illnesses after exposure to a message that manipulated personal responsibility for illness. Paradoxically, participants with strong just world be…
Answers to 20 Questions About Interrater Reliability and Interrater Agreement
The use of interrater reliability (IRR) and interrater agreement (IRA) indices has increased dramatically during the past 20 years. This popularity is, at least in part, because of the increased role of multilevel modeling techniques (e.g., hierarchical linear modeling and multilevel structural equation modeling) in organizational research. IRR and IRA indices are often used to justify aggregating lower-level data used in composition models. The …
History and Use of Relative Importance Indices in Organizational Research
The search for a meaningful index of the relative importance of predictors in multiple regression has been going on for years. This type of index is often desired when the explanatory aspects of regression analysis are of interest. The authors define relative importance as the proportionate contribution each predictor makes to R 2 , considering both the unique contribution of each predictor by itself and its incremental contribution when combined…
