Against current debates about the gradual ‘Islamisation’ of South Asia by Sufi cults, and the shifting ambiguity and fixity of religious boundaries in colonial India, this article is an account of the cult of the Qadiriyya-Qalandariyya saints in the Mirpur district of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. While there is still some evidence of conflict over the planning and building of mosques in Britain, in this article I demonstrate that this is not currently the case in Bradford. Having first considered issues relating to the status and significance of mosques in Britain, and then the institutionalisation of Islam in Bradford, I suggest that this absence of mosque conflict has much to do with the social and political implications of a densely po…

The city of al-Raqqa in north central Syria rivalled early Baghdad in scale, and was briefly during the 'Abbasid caliphate the imperial capital of an empire stretching from North Africa to Central Asia. Now largely levelled the multifaceted Islamic cityscape is revealed by aerial and satellite imagery. It is at this site that the evidence of innovative Islamic industries has been revealed by excavations undertaken by the Raqqa Ancient Industry pr…
Radical changes in Islamic glass technology
The chemical analysis of excavated glass fragments from dated archaeological contexts in Raqqa, Syria, has provided a detailed picture of the chemical compositions of artefacts deriving from eighth to ninth and 11th century glassmaking and glassworking activities. Evidence for primary glass production has been found at three excavated sites, of eighth to ninth, 11th and 12th century dates; the first two are discussed here. The 2 km long industria…

This paper examines the case of an independent Muslim girls’ school which applied for funding from the state in May 1994. Established in 1984, Feversham College struggles to survive on the limited finance forthcoming from parents’ fees and the support of Muslim benefactors. The failure of even a single Muslim school in Britain to win state funding has in recent years become a symbol of many Muslims’ concerns about how equally they participate in …
