Cultivating hope
Building on prior theorizing on hope, dramaturgy of emotions, and the notion of transfiguration, this paper examines how the Weight Watchers brand elicits and embodies hope among its consumers. Based on the findings from a qualitative study of Weight Watchers, the authors propose a three-stage conceptualization of brand-centric hope cultivation. This conceptualization highlights the importance of collective processes in hope emergence, elevation,…
Productive Consumption in the Class-Mediated Construction of Domestic Masculinity
In the context of do-it-yourself (DIY) home improvement, this article extends theorizing on productive consumption, domestic masculinity, and social class. Based on interviews with informants varying in cultural capital endowments, the findings reveal that productive consumption shapes domestic masculinity in relation to class-mediated identity conflicts and ideals. Among high-cultural-capital (HCC) informants, DIY home improvement counters the b…
Ritual-based Behavior that Reinforces Hegemonic Masculinity in Golf
Golf is male dominated and consists of rituals and ritualized behaviors that both reflect and help create hegemonic masculinity. Using in-depth interviews with amateur committed women golfers, we explored how women negotiated masculinized rituals in golf. Our data indicated three ways: (a) accommodating (i.e., acknowledging masculine rituals and working around them), (b) unapologetic (i.e., challenging masculine rituals that threaten entitlement …
Building Understanding of the Domain of Consumer Vulnerability
Consumer vulnerability is a sometimes misunderstood or misused concept that is equated erroneously with demographic characteristics, stigmatization, consumer protection, unmet needs, discrimination, or disadvantage. This article seeks to clarify the boundaries for what is and what is not consumer vulnerability. By explicating the key themes of consumer vulnerability from previous studies in the consumer research and marketing literatures, the aut…
A Consumer-Behavior Perspective on Intimate Partner Violence
This research examines women's experiences of and responses to intimate partner violence using the perspective of the extended self. From in-depth interviews with a demographically diverse group of women in the United States, the primary theme to emerge was that chronic abuse is experienced as the male partner's ongoing campaign to incorporate the abused woman into his extended self, by appropriating or destroying the aspects of her that give her…
Resource Allocation in Households with Women as Chief Wage Earners
Resource theory and the human capital argument remain the dominant theoretical perspectives for understanding household choice. Yet households in which wives earn more than their husbands do not reflect either one, possibly due to the assumption in these perspectives that all resources are pooled. Two studies investigated household resource allocation. The first found that when the woman was the chief wage earner, joint pools of money were used t…
Social Support for Decision Making During Grief Due to Death
Death creates a discontinuity in the lives of survivors. Formerly, family and friends provided social support as the bereaved reconciled the loss and created new identities for themselves. The availability of such support in postmodern society is lessened, making it more likely that the bereaved will turn to commercial service providers for support. Marketers need to prepare employees to provide such support, and assurance is needed that the supp…
Lumpkin's Abbreviated Version of Rotter's Locus of Control Scale
Lumpkin (1985) proposed the use of a six-item scale (derived from Rotter's I-E scale), in those instances where the locus of control construct is not the primary focus of the research, but rather, merely an intervening variable. We have used the Lumpkin scale in a series of studies and found its reliability to be considerably less than expected. Consequently, in such instances, we recommend that researchers interested in measuring the locus of co…
Another Look at the Impact of Information Presentation Format
Previous research has indicated that the information acquisition process is highly dependent upon the manner in which information is presented. This study investigated information acquisition in several variations of the Information Display Board (IDB) format, including an interactive computer version. The amount of information acquired and the manner in which it was acquired were dependent upon the presentation format. The results suggest that o…
Characteristics of Adopters and Non-Adopters of Home Computers
Adopters and non-adopters of home computers were contrasted in terms of their demographics, psychographics, and experiences with technical consumer products. Experiences with other computer-related products and services were found to play a major role in movement toward purchase of a home computer. Further, the profile of the adopter appears to be consistent with that of a particular type of creative consumer
Sex Role Orientation and Leisure
Sex roles are undergoing a major change in the United States today, and it has been hypothesized that the changing sex roles will be evidenced in changed leisure behavior. This study looks at a demographic variable (sex) and two measures of masculinity-feminity (the California Psychological Inventory's Fe-scale and the Personal Attributes Questionnaire) and their relationships with leisure behavior. Sex was found to be a better explanatory variab…
