  • All about the Rites

Open Access•Gilles Boileau, Céline Bonicco-Donato et al.•BOOK•All about the Rites•2023

This third volume of the “Myriades d’Asies” series is the result of an international conference which was held at the Collège de France in 2018, and published in book form by Hémisphères Editions in 2021, the present digital edition being a revised and improved version of the printed edition. It intends to look afresh at the way ancient China progressively evolved into a ritualistic society, that is a world in which social interactions in times o…

  • Confucius et la tombe de ses parents

    Open Access•Alain Thote•CHAPTER•All about the Rites•2023

  • Shang And Zhou Funeral Practices

    Alain Thote•CHAPTER•Early Chinese religion•2009

The study of funeral customs and ancient societies from archaeological materials has been the subject of intense debate among scholars. During the late Shang and the Zhou, jade amulets, plaques, and religious objects seem to play a slightly different role: concentrated in the inner coffin, very close to the body or, rather, in direct contact with it, they protected the body. This chapter examines the traditions of Qin and Chu, although both are r…

  • Images d un royaume disparu

    Alain Thote•ARTICLE•Cahiers d Extrême-Asie•2008

Among the famed "pictorial bronzes" of the fifth and early fourth centuries BC, one group of vessels stand out for being hammered, rather than cast, and for featuring decoration that is incised in punctate lines. These unusual bronzes were probably manufactured in the southeast coastal region of China. Their decoration, illustrating drinking feasts, archery contests, and hunting scenes, reflects the distinctive local culture of that area. Among o…

  • Au-delà du monde connu

    Alain Thote•ARTICLE•Arts asiatiques•2006

Plusi…

  • Du message à l'image

    Alain Thote•ARTICLE•Arts asiatiques•2003

In this article, the writer intends to study some of the changes that appeared in the evolution of Chinese art between ca 1500 BC and 221 BC. Here are analyzed the artistic themes of that period and the ways by which these themes were expressed by artists. Four points are reviewed, which correspond to four succeeding steps in the general evolution. 1) The relationship between writing, images and signs during the Shang period is first studied. The…

  • Lacquer Craftsmanship in the Qin and Chu Kingdoms

Alain Thote•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Archaeology•2003•Citada por: 1

This article deals with the lacquer traditions of the late Warring States period as seen in the Qin and Chu kingdoms and in relation to recent discoveries from Sichuan. Qin lacquer working techniques and style are different from those of Chu, which are evidenced by hundreds of objects. By contrast, due to poor conditions of preservation, Qin lacquer craftsmanship can only be known through very few objects, some of which show a strong influence fr…

    Alain Thote•ARTICLE•Arts asiatiques•1987

In this article, I intend to present a bronze sculpture representing a bird with a long neck having deer's antlers and which has been discovered in the funerary chamber of the tomb no. 1 at Leigudun in northern Hubei Province. This piece which was placed in the proximity of the double coffin of the Marquis Yi of the state of Zeng has brought to light many new questions. For example, what was its original use ? What could be the meaning of such a …

The Middle Yellow River Valley Longshan Cultures. Translated from Chinese, this article presents certain neolithic cultures in China that, as of yet, are not too well known in the West. This general survey of the Middle Yellow River Valley Longshan cultures, made by Yang Xizhang, a member of the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, first appeared in 1984 (in Xin Zhongguo de kaogu faxian he yanjiu — Archaeological Ex…

  • Innovations techniques et diversification des commandes

    Alain Thote•ARTICLE•Arts asiatiques•1990

Tomb No. 1 at Leigudun, Suizhou, in Hubei province, where more than two hundred lacquer pieces have been excavated, provides an excellent example of the existing techniques during the 5th century B.C.: lacquer could be applied on wood as well as on metal, leather and silk threads. But most of the pieces were carved in a single wood block or were composed of many carved wood blocks which were joined together with the tenon and mortise method. Duri…

    Alain Thote•ARTICLE•Arts asiatiques•1996

In this note I intend to demonstrate that the face motif on the guards of a number of Eastern Zhou swords was copied around the 6th cent. B.C. or slightly earlier from Liangzhu jades. This appears to be part of a larger phenomenon, in which various ancient jades from the Neolithic period were reused or copied during the Shang and Zhou periods. The swords that are reviewed here were decorated with a face represented on only one side of the guard. …
