  • Lemur Distribution in Relation to Treefall Canopy Gaps in Masoala National Park, Northeast Madagascar

Open Access•Antonin Andriamahaihavana, Zafimahery Rakotomalala et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2026

Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot facing increasing anthropogenic pressures, with 95% of lemur species threatened with extinction. In addition to habitat loss and hunting, cyclones create treefall gaps with unknown effects on arboreal species. We examined the effect of Cyclone Eliakim, which struck Masoala National Park in March 2018 with sustained wind speeds reaching 151 km/h. We assessed whether lemur densities and their microhabitat niches…

  • Linking Vegetation Characteristics of Madagascar’s Spiny Forest to Habitat Occupancy of Lepilemur petteri

    Open Access•Yedidya R Ratovonamana, Celina Apel et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•Referências: 92

Climatic changes with unpredictable weather conditions have negative effects on many primates. With several lemur species reaching their ecological limits in the dry and hypervariable spiny forest, Madagascar might provide an example for understanding adaptations of primates to unpredictable conditions. Here, we aimed to identify vegetation characteristics that allow Lepilemur petteri to persist in an environment at the limit of its ecological ni…

  • Strange Tunes—Acoustic Variation and Character Displacement in a Tarsier Hybrid Zone

    Open Access•Yvonne E-M B Bohr, Azhari Purbatrapsila et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•Referências: 132

Natural hybridization provides valuable insights into evolutionary processes, such as speciation and the forces driving or hindering it. Sulawesi tarsiers Tarsius dentatus and T. lariang hybridize within a limited area, suggesting selection against hybrids. Their species- and sex-specific duet songs might serve as a premating barrier in sympatry, especially if differences are strengthened by character displacement. Individuals of mixed origin mig…

  • Plant secondary metabolites and primate food choices

Open Access•Hannah R Windley, Danswell Starrs et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2022

The role of plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) in shaping the feeding decisions, habitat suitability, and reproductive success of herbivorous mammals has been a major theme in ecology for decades. Although primatologists were among the first to test these ideas, studies of PSMs in the feeding ecology of non‐human primates have lagged in recent years, leading to a recent call for primatologists to reconnect with phytochemists to advance our unders…

  • Using Utilitarian Plants for Lemur Conservation

    Open Access•Cathlin Konersmann, Fanambinantsoa Noromiarilanto et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022•Citada por: 7•Referências: 60

Nature and species conservation often conflict with intensive natural resource or land use. Many protected areas are too small for long-term conservation of viable vertebrate populations, especially in Madagascar, and forests are subject to exploitation for a variety of natural resources. Trying to exclude people from the use of these resources has not been successful during economic, natural, or political crises or when human population growth o…

  • The function of geophagy in Nepal gray langurs

    Open Access•Eliot T Monaco, Carola Borries et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2019•Referências: 66

OBJECTIVES: Geophagy has several hypothesized functions, among them (1) detoxification of plant secondary compounds, for example, tannins, (2) buffering stomach pH to alleviate acidosis caused by high sugar intake, and (3) supplementing the diet with mineral nutrients. We tested these hypotheses in Nepal gray langurs (Semnopithecus schistaceus), a foregut fermenter for which fruits and leaves dominate the diet at different times of the year. MATE…

  • The importance of protein in leaf selection of folivorous primates

    Open Access•Jörg U Ganzhorn, Joerg U Ganzhorn et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2017

Protein limitation has been considered a key factor in hypotheses on the evolution of life history and animal communities, suggesting that animals should prioritize protein in their food choice. This contrasts with the limited support that food selection studies have provided for such a priority in nonhuman primates, particularly for folivores. Here, we suggest that this discrepancy can be resolved if folivores only need to select for high protei…

  • Sex and seasonal differences in diet and nutrient intake in Verreaux's sifakas ( Propithecus verreauxi )

Open Access•Flávia Koch, Jörg U Ganzhorn et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2017

Fluctuations in food availability are a major challenge faced by primates living in seasonal climates. Variation in food availability can be especially challenging for females, because of the high energetic costs of reproduction. Therefore, females must adapt the particular demands of the different reproductive stages to the seasonal availability of resources. Madagascar has a highly seasonal climate, where food availability can be extremely vari…

    Open Access•Iris Dröscher, Jessica M Rothman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2016•Citada por: 5•Referências: 83

OBJECTIVES: Small-bodied folivores are rare because processing leaves often requires extensive gut adaptations and lengthy retention times for fiber fermentation. However, the <1 kg nocturnal white-footed sportive lemurs (Lepilemur leucopus) persist on a leaf-based diet. We investigated how extrinsic (i.e., seasonality in temperature and food availability) and intrinsic factors (i.e., reproductive state) influence nutrient intake and explored how…

  • Determinants of terrestrial feeding in an arboreal primate

    Open Access•Timothy M Eppley, Giuseppe Donati et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2016•Citada por: 6•Referências: 121

OBJECTIVES: The proximate and ultimate determinants that may have prompted some primates to shift from an arboreal to terrestrial feeding niche, whether due to environmental change, seasonality, and/or predation pressure, are poorly understood. Within a fragmented littoral forest in southeast Madagascar, an arboreal strepsirrhine population spends a large proportion of time on the ground, thus we aimed to identify which factors influence terrestr…

It has been shown that differences in resource density and nutrient supply affect variation in ranging patterns, habitat use, and sociality. Among nonhuman primates, chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ) and bonobos ( P. paniscus ) have often been used as models for the link between social system and habitat ecology. Field reports suggest that resource density is higher in habitats occupied by bonobos (compared to chimpanzee habitats), and in the West …

    Open Access•Jörg U Ganzhorn•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1987

The utilization of eucalyptus plantations by seven sympatric species of prosimians was studied in the eastern rainforest of Madagascar. The species were Avahi laniger, Cheirogaleus major, Hapalemur griseus, Indri indri, Lemur fulvus, Lepilemur mustelinus , and Microcebus rufus . None of the lemurs was ever found in young eucalyptus plantations with little undergrowth. This was mainly due to the lack of travel opportunities within the shrub layer …

During their 120 to 165 million years of isolation, the flora and fauna of Madagascar evolved, to a large extent, independently of the African mainland. 1 In contrast to other oceanic islands, Madagascar is large enough to house the major components of tropical ecosystems, allowing tests of evolutionary hypotheses on the level of complete communities. Taking lemurs, the primates of Madagascar, as an example, evolutionary hypotheses correctly pred…

Seventeen sportive lemurs (Lepilemur ruficaudatus) were captured in a dry, deciduous forest in western Madagascar, and the resting metabolic rates were measured. According to the data, resting metabolic rates of Lepilemur ruficaudatus are among the lowest of mammalian folivores recorded so far. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
