S ummary . 218 upper sixth‐formers at three West Riding schools were given a battery of tests and questionnaires designed to investigate relationships between personality and syllabus‐boundness/syllabus‐freedom. A 20‐item inventory was developed and used to isolate groups of 28 sylbs and 31 sylfs. S ummary . Academic performance in three fields of study, engineering, physical sciences and languages, has been analysed by comparing the characteristics of successful students with those of the less successful and those who failed to graduate. The students obtaining the better degrees generally had the better entry qualifications, and in engineering and the sciences, had reacted less against the industrial training element of sandwich courses. …

A 20-item questionnaire designed by Joyce and Hudson to measure convergence and divergence was given to a sample of 306 first-year university students from various science and non-science disciplines. From the data the scale was refined using factor analysis. S ummary . 186 students, 93 per cent of one intake of social and health scientists into the University of Bradford, were classified according to degree result and compared on a number of measures.
