Peeking under the Asian Iron Curtain
While Cold War historiography often foregrounds severed or frayed political ties, this article ethnographically explores unexpected friendships forming across apparent Cold War divides between Soviet Central Asian and Pakistani intellectuals -most notably, Muhammad Iqbal, Mirsaid Mirshakar, Mirzo Tursunzoda and Faiz Ahmad Faiz.These exchanges were initially made possible by Soviet agendas to build anti-colonial relations abroad by sending Soviet …

Following the method of Bourdieu’s Distinction (1984) and especially The Weight of the World (1999), this article presents interviews with four Spanish record labels, which provide case studies of the workings of the field. Against theories of cultural globalization, this article argues that there are substantial inequities in the global flows of punk subculture between different parts of the world. The flows are unequal and unbalanced. The use of the internet contributes to this inequality rather than solving it. Punk Subculture in Mexico and the Anti-globalization Movement
This article explores some strands of the current movement against capitalist globalization. It examines the affinity between punk subculture and autonomous politics taking the Mexican punk scene as an example. Based on participant observation it describes what Bourdieu would call the habitus of punk in Mexico. Against theories of cultural hybridity and disembodied flows of recorded media, this article argues for the continued relevance of the concept of regional musical scenes.
