Pathways to inner peace
This study explores the extent to which chaplains employ structured methods in their practice in view of home-based chaplaincy in the Netherlands by conducting a secondary analysis of 40 case studies from the Dutch Case Studies Project (2016-21). Findings indicate that chaplains employ a broad range of interventions, among which two structured methods were identified: The Diamond Model and mindfulness. Goals and outcomes of chaplaincy in varying outpatient, primary, and community care contexts
Several studies have examined the goals and outcomes of chaplaincy within institutional settings. Our study contributes to the literature by examining whether chaplaincy goals and outcomes are specific to different outpatient, primary, and community care contexts. We conducted a round of 9 and one of 8 focus groups, with clients, chaplains, and other professionals from five contexts: the Dutch earthquake zone, general healthcare, pediatric pallia…
Development of the Dutch Chaplaincy Outcome Measure
Outcome research is becoming increasingly important in chaplaincy. However, current outcome measures rarely reflect outcomes reflecting chaplaincy goals. Chaplains’ Professional Identity and a Structured Approach to Chaplaincy
The trend towards evidence-based health care challenges chaplains to work with structured—predefined and standardized—interventions that lead to measurable outcomes. However, chaplaincy literature raises various objections against using a structured approach. These include compromising the chaplain-client relationship, standardizing and limiting chaplaincy content, and the instrumentalization of the spiritual dimension. Based on a thematic analys…
