  • New Results From the Pre‐Pottery Neolithic Site of Al Uyaynah, Tabuk, in Northwestern Saudi Arabia

    Open Access•Khalid Alasmari, Stephanie F Piper et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2026•Referências: 22

Al Uyaynah is a low sandstone mound on an alluvial plain, long known for its extensive surface remains of stone‐built circular and rectangular structures. Following test excavations in 2012, more detailed excavation was undertaken in 2016 within one of the largest rectangular stone structures. This demonstrates a sequence with lithic and faunal remains in the time range 7190–6900 cal BC . The lithic industry includes Amuq points, burins, sickle i…

This work presents the results of a study of mining-metallurgical production in late pre-Hispanic times in the Collahuasi Mining District (Northern Chile), specifically examining the technology employed and changes in the scale of production. We focus on recent results obtained in a study of 50 pyrometallurgical furnaces identi ed at the Ujina 8 and Ujina 10 archaeological sites and their relation to Collahuasi 37, the metallurgical camp located …

  • Late Pleistocene Fuel Management and Human Colonization of the Atacama Desert, Northern Chile

    Open Access•Delphine Joly, C M Santoro et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2017•Citada por: 14•Referências: 35

Hunter-gatherers collected and used various woody species depending on the landscape, availability of plant communities, and sociocultural considerations. With extensive paleo-wetlands and groundwater-fed oases, the Atacama Desert was interspersed with riparian woodlands that provided vital resources (fuel, water, and game) at the end of the Pleistocene in areas such as the Pampa del Tamarugal (PdT) basin. We use anthracological analyses to deter…

  • Late Pleistocene human occupation of the hyperarid core in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile

    Open Access•Claudio Latorre, C M Santoro et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2013

Few archeological sites in South America contain uncontroversial evidence for when the first peopling of the continent occurred. Largely ignored in this debate, extreme environments are assumed either as barriers to this early wave of migration or without potential for past habitability. Here, we report on a rare 12–13 ka human occupation from Quebrada Maní (site QM12), a plantless, near rainless landscape (1240 m asl and 85 km from the Pacific O…
