The invisible evidence of birth
It is well known that parity affects the human skeleton through biomechanical strain during pregnancy and birth, lactation, and sexual steroid hormone expression. Pelvic features are bony exostoses and lesions found on the pelvis and are frequently interpreted as parturition scars, although the direct causal factors remain unclear. In this study, we created a weighted pelvic pattern index (PPI) by combining all pelvic features (preauricular sulcu…

First Swiss alpine agropastoral societies
The aim of this study is to add new data to the knowledge of the first alpine agro-pastoral societies by studying their dietary practices and mobility. Using the principles of isotopic biogeochemistry, the stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13 C), nitrogen (δ15 N) and sulphur (δ34 S) on bone collagen and strontium isotopes (87Sr/86Sr) on dental enamel were measured to discuss the diet and residence history of 49 individuals from the Middle Neolith…

Human Skeletons, Grave Goods and Textual Sources
This paper’s primary focus is the investigation of Late Iron Age funeral practices. This is carried out by means of a multidisciplinary study of two necropolises, Randogne – Bluche and Sion – Parking des Remparts, which are located in southwestern Switzerland. The overall purpose of this paper is to enhance the socio-cultural understanding of this period through an integrated approach that combines the fields of bioanthropology, archaeology and a…
A unique case of skeletal dysplasia in an adult male in Late Iron Age Switzerland
OBJECTIVE: We report a probable case of multiple skeletal dysplasia observed in a Late Iron Age young adult male. MATERIALS: The individual studied belongs to a Late Iron Age necropolis from Switzerland. The skeletal elements are well preserved METHODS: Macroscopic and radiographic assessment. RESULTS: The individual shows evidence of both craniofacial and mandibular deformation. Developmental defects are also visible with effects on the general …
Indicators of motherhood? Sacral preauricular extensions and notches in identified skeletal collections
The sacral preauricular extension (SPE) and sacral preauricular notch (SPN) are morphological changes at the ventral apex of the sacrum. We recently specified their shapes and appearances and suggested a scoring system based on prehistoric Austrian skeletal assemblages. We hypothesized that these specific pelvic changes relate to past pregnancies and parturitions, a hypothesis that we now tested on a subsample of individuals from the Simon Identi…
More than the sum of their parts
This research focuses on the Neolithic populations of Western Switzerland (5500-2200 BCE) and on establishing their paleopathological profile. This chronological period presents varying burial practices, and the aim was to be able to synthesise all information regarding the pathologies these populations exhibited, in such a way that statistical tests could be performed to determine whether geographical (site location), biological (age, sex, statu…

Cases of serpens endocrania symmetrica in young individuals from Neolithic Western Switzerland
Endocranial lesions known as serpens endocrania symmetrica (SES) appear relatively frequently in the paleopathological record, but their significance often goes undiscussed. For the past decade, however, research has proved conclusively that their presence is an indicator of illnesses within the corpus. As such, cases found in the archaeological record can provide clues as to the kinds of diseases that prehistoric populations endured. We report f…

Dental Anthropology at the University of Geneva
This article presents research currently being conducted in the field of dental anthropology at the Department of Anthropology and Ecology of the University of Geneva, Switzerland. The first author, S. Eades, is carrying out a doctoral thesis on the familiality of dental morphological traits and their use as “familial” indicators in the case of multivariate and univariate analyses of interindividual distances. Her methods are based on the modern …
Swiss Bell Beaker population dynamics
La question du « peuplement » campaniforme en Suisse occidentale. État de la question et apports de la morphologie dentaire et crânienne
This study presents two parallel studies concerning the population of Western Switzerland during Neolithic times, based on the non-metric traits of eight samples dating from the Middle Neolithic to the Bell Beaker period (4500-2200 BC). One study was carried out on 34 cranial traits, the other on 61 dental traits. Multidimensional scaling and hierarchical clustering analysis of these two datasets made it possible to establish three models concern…
