Associations between attitudes accepting of wife abuse and emotional abuse, forced heavy work, and food deprivation during pregnancy in Nepal
BACKGROUND: Social norms and gendered power relationships contribute to the acceptability of 'wife abuse' - a common form of domestic violence globally. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence and overlap of emotional abuse, forced heavy work, and food deprivation during pregnancy and examine their association with women's attitudes accepting of wife abuse in Nepal. METHODS: Baseline data were used from a randomized controlled trial involving preg…
Domestic violence and food insecurity among pregnant women in Nepal
Domestic violence was strongly associated with food insecurity during pregnancy. Screening for domestic violence among food-insecure pregnant women and addressing underlying causes could mitigate risks to maternal and child health
More Than a Question
Antenatal care consultations provide a critical opportunity to enquire about experiences of violence, yet midwives often face structural and practical barriers. Although several countries have implemented guidelines recommending routine enquiry, limited research has examined how midwives introduce this sensitive topic during consultations. This study uses conversation analysis (CA) to examine how midwives introduce questions about violence in 35 …
The Consequences of A History of Violence on Women’s Pregnancy and Childbirth in the Nordic Countries
Violence against women (VAW) is a global challenge also in the childbearing period. Despite high gender equality, there is a high prevalence of VAW in the Nordic countries. This scoping review aims to explore predictors for and consequences of a history of violence on women’s pregnancy and childbirth in the Nordic countries, including women’s experience of the impact of violence and the interventions used to detect, address consequences, and prev…
Cultural Sensitivity in Interventions Aiming to Reduce or Prevent Intimate Partner Violence During Pregnancy
Intimate partner violence (IPV) around the time of pregnancy is a recognized global health problem. Ethnic minorities and immigrant pregnant women experiencing IPV require culturally responsive health services. The aim of this scoping review was to identify aspects of cultural sensitivity in interventions to prevent or reduce IPV among ethnic minorities and immigrant pregnant women in high-income countries. Improving Safety Among Pregnant Women Reporting Domestic Violence in Nepal—A Pilot Study
Introduction : Domestic violence (DV) during pregnancy is associated with poor health outcomes for both the mother and newborn, and sometimes death. In a low-income country like Nepal, women have few options to leave abusive situations. Therefore, there is a need for interventions to improve their safety. The aim of our study was to explore the use of safety measures before and after an educational intervention among women who have reported DV du…
User-Involvement in the Development of a Culturally Sensitive Intervention in the Safe Pregnancy Study to Prevent Intimate Partner Violence
Intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy has negative health impacts on the woman and the fetus. There is a lack of evidence supporting effective interventions to prevent IPV during pregnancy. This user-involvement study was conducted to get feedback on a culturally sensitive, tablet intervention containing questions about violence and safety-behaviors and a video promoting safety behaviors. This resulted in important feedback on the inte…
Domestic violence and perinatal outcomes – a prospective cohort study from Nepal
Domestic violence is common in Nepal. This is a potential risk factor for severe morbidity and mortality in newborns. We found that the risk of having a preterm baby was higher for pregnant women who experienced both fear and violence. This should be recognized by the health sector. In this study, no significant differences were found in the rate of cesarean section nor low birthweight for women who had experienced any domestic violence compared …

Design: We conducted a cross-sectional study using baseline data from a randomised controlled study pe…
‘They just walk away’ – women’s perception of being silenced by antenatal health workers
BACKGROUND: Domestic violence during pregnancy has detrimental effects on the health of the mother and the newborn. Antenatal care provides a 'window of opportunity' to identify and assist victims of domestic violence during pregnancy. Little is known about the experience, needs, and expectations from the women's perspective in relation to domestic violence in Nepal. OBJECTIVE: Our study aims to explore how women who have experienced domestic vio…
