Reflections on World Englishes
An Old English Grammar
This book is designed especially for the literary student of English, and provides a single compact grammar primarily concerned with Classical Old English, rather than the other Old English dialects. The book takes a descriptive approach and avoids assuming a knowledge of Germanic philology. The introduction provides a minimum background of knowledge and indicates the kinds of evidence on which the grammatical description is based.

A small set of English verbs may take the inflections -ed or -t for preterit and past participle. Three attempts have been made in recent years to apply the techniques of modern descriptive linguistics to the Old English spellings produced by breaking, palatal diphthongization, i -umlaut, and velar umlaut. Desirable as such attempts are, the authors of the present article find the results still far from satisfactory.
