Empty Justice
This article investigates the operations of United States immigration courts ethnographically, examining how law, politics, and bureaucracy converge in the everyday production of immigration adjudication. Based on over 500 h of observation in 36 courtrooms across 11 immigration courts, we document how life‐altering deportation decisions—often in absentia and lasting only minutes—are rendered through routinized procedures that obscure judicial amb…
Containing futures
This article traces how aspirations management interventions – specifically those that accompanied the United States-Mexico Southern Border Program of 2014 and the Italy-Libya Memorandum of Understanding of 2017 – influence young people’s aspirations and decisions to migrate. The article details three typologies of aspiration management specific to migrant children and youth: child protection interventions, awareness and education campaigns, and …
How Can I Have a Future
Based upon multi-sited research with Indigenous youth (13 to17 years old) deported from the United States and Mexico to Guatemala, this article situates young people’s mobility within multiple historical and ongoing displacements of Indigenous peoples. Longitudinal research with youth reveals that they move in multiple directions, often with great uncertainty, across geopolitical borders and that their mobility carries temporal meaning. Upon depo…
Anatomy of a crisis
In 2018, the Italian Coast Guard rescued 190 migrants onboard an overcrowded vessel from Libya. Held at sea for five days, the Italian government finally permitted the Coast Guard to dock in Catania, Sicily, yet refused to allow the migrants to disembark. This article begins by dissecting the anatomy of this crisis, tracing the diverse actors and institutions involved in its creation and resolution through first-hand accounts. Multi-sited ethnogr…

Migranthood
Migranthood chronicles deportation from the perspectives of Indigenous youth who migrate unaccompanied from Guatemala to Mexico and the United States. In communities of origin in Guatemala, zones of transit in Mexico, detention centers for children in the U.S., government facilities receiving returned children in Guatemala, and communities of return, young people share how they negotiate everyday violence and discrimination, how they and their fa…
A Better “Best Interests
This conceptual article examines the role and limitations of the best interests standard in international and domestic policy, with a particular focus on how the standard is implicated in the treatment of unaccompanied minors in the United States. Motivated by emergent interdisciplinary scholarship on global youth and informed by a comparative consideration of best interests across other professions, we propose a new model of best interests. What…
Integration of unaccompanied migrant youth in the United States
Between October 2013 and July 2016, over 156,000 children traveling without their guardians were apprehended at the US-Mexico border and transferred to the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). During that same period, ORR placed over 123,000 unaccompanied migrant youth-predominantly from Central America-with a parent or other adult sponsor residing in the US. Following placement, local communities are tasked with integrating migrant …
The Coercive Power of Debt
Borders
Borders are historically understood as geopolitical boundaries that demarcate the limits between nation‐states. With globalization, the study of borders has shifted from a limited analysis of the political economy of geography to the ways in which people, goods, and information move across borders and reside in the borderlands. Anthropologists have made critical contributions to the study of borders and borderlands by examining the ways they are …

Parents of global youth
In the United States, recently arrived migrant youth encounter competing media and institutional discourses that cast them as dependents who have been rendered ‘left behind,’ ‘on their own,’ or ‘unaccompanied’ by their parents. A corresponding narrative emerges in which young migrants’ parents are framed as abusive, neglectful, and ignorant. Combined, these portrayals may garner specialized services and contribute to success in the legal realm. A…
Charting Directions for Research on Immigrant Children Affected by Undocumented Status
Three groups of children from Mexico and Central America are vulnerable to effects of U.S. immigration policies: (1) foreign-born children who entered the United States with undocumented immigrant parents; (2) unaccompanied children who entered the United States alone; and (3) U.S.-born citizen-children of undocumented immigrant parents. Despite the recent demographic growth of these youth, scholarship on their strengths and challenges is under-t…
Rightlessness in an Age of Rights
In 2015, media headlines on migration were as ubiquitous as they were troubling. An estimated 6,000 Rohingya Muslims and Bangladeshis stranded at sea were repeatedly denied refuge by multiple Southeast Asian nations. More than a million Syrians, Afghans, and Eritreans fled their war-torn countries, only to be met with interdiction, riot police, barbed wire, suspended rail lines, exceptional passport checks, holding facilities, and, eventually, cl…
Protecting Undocumented Students Post-Election
Migrant Youth, Transnational Families, and the State
In this ground-breaking ethnography, anthropologist Lauren Heidbrink deconstructs the "problem" of migrant children, examining the historical, political, and institutional roots of contemporary immigration policies and the experiences of the migrant children who navigate this legal and emotional terrain
