  • The Arsenal and the Ballot Box

    Open Access•Stef Van Buuren•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Politics•2025•Referências: 20

This paper systematically explores incompatibilities between nuclear weapons and democracy. Based on a procedural definition of democracy, it argues that nuclear weapons’ relationship with democracy is defined both by inherent limitations stemming from the features of nuclear weapons and by assumptions about the requirements of nuclear strategy. It concludes that although ideas on the requirements of nuclear strategy modify the level of compatibi…

  • Nuclear memories for the future

Open Access•Stef Van Buuren, Benoît Pelopidas et al.•ARTICLE•Thesis Eleven•2025•Referências: 7

Using two novel surveys of representative samples of Europeans in nine countries, we identify two gaps in Europeans’ understandings of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. First, there is a gap in awareness of Hiroshima versus Nagasaki, which obscures the potential significance of the Nagasaki bombing for evaluating the morality and controllability of nuclear explosions. Second, there exists a gap between older and younger generations’ knowled…

  • Evaluation and prediction of individual growth trajectories

    Open Access•Stef Van Buuren•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2023

Longitudinal references capture the dynamic nature of child growth. The adaptive growth chart for individual monitoring works with exact ages, corrects for regression to the mean, has a known distribution at any pair of ages and is fast. We recommend the method for evaluating and predicting individual child growth

  • Missing Data in Clinical Research

    Open Access•Peter C Austin, I R White et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Cardiology•2021

Missing data is a common occurrence in clinical research. Missing data occurs when the value of the variables of interest are not measured or recorded for all subjects in the sample. Common approaches to addressing the presence of missing data include complete-case analyses, where subjects with missing data are excluded, and mean-value imputation, where missing values are replaced with the mean value of that variable in those subjects for whom it…

  • Synthetic growth reference charts

Open Access•Michael Hermanussen, Karol Stec et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2016

OBJECTIVES: To reanalyze the between-population variance in height, weight, and body mass index (BMI), and to provide a globally applicable technique for generating synthetic growth reference charts. METHODS: Using a baseline set of 196 female and 197 male growth studies published since 1831, common factors of height, weight, and BMI are extracted via Principal Components separately for height, weight, and BMI. Combining information from single g…

  • Better experiences with quality of care predict well-being of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the Netherlands

    Open Access•Jane M Cramm, Shahab Jolani et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

To improve quality of care for chronically ill patients, multicomponent interventions may be needed

  • The Fountain of Age

    Open Access•Stef Van Buuren, Rom J M Perenboom et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

There are very few norms to evaluate and monitor the health and functioning of the elderly. This paper proposes a compact spatial representation of 25 health measurements of European citizens older than 50 years. Data from 44,285 unique individuals were obtained from the EU-wide Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe(SHARE) data collected in 2004-2007 and were analyzed by homogeneity analysis, a form of non-linear principal components …

  • Height of South Asian children in the Netherlands aged 0–20 years

Open Access•J A de Wilde, Paula Van Dommelen et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2014

The discrepancies between the South Asian and Dutch and WHO height-for-age references indicate differences in growth patterns between the source populations

  • Trends in birth weight and the prevalence of low birth weight and small-for-gestational-age in Surinamese South Asian babies since 1974

Open Access•J A de Wilde, Stef Van Buuren et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Since 1974, although the mean birth weight of Surinamese South Asian babies remained unchanged, they gained a healthier weight for their gestational age

  • Multiple Imputation of Squared Terms

    Open Access•Gerko Vink, Stef Van Buuren•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2013•Citada por: 2•Referências: 5

We propose a new multiple imputation technique for imputing squares. Current methods yield either unbiased regression estimates or preserve data relations. No method, however, seems to deliver both, which limits researchers in the implementation of regression analysis in the presence of missing data. Besides, current methods only work under a missing completely at random (MCAR) mechanism. Our method for imputing squares uses a polynomial combinat…

  • Increase in Prevalence of Overweight in Dutch Children and Adolescents

Open Access•Yvonne Schönbeck, Henk Talma et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2011

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity among Dutch children and adolescents, to examine the 30-years trend, and to create new body mass index reference charts. DESIGN: Nationwide cross-sectional data collection by trained health care professionals. PARTICIPANTS: 10,129 children of Dutch origin aged 0-21 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Overweight (including obesity) and obesity prevalences for Dutch children, defined by the cu…

  • Mice

Open Access•Stef Van Buuren, Karin Groothuis‐Oudshoorn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Statistical Software•2011

The R package mice imputes incomplete multivariate data by chained equations. The software mice 1.0 appeared in the year 2000 as an S-PLUS library, and in 2001 as an R package. mice 1.0 introduced predictor selection, passive imputation and automatic pooling. This article documents mice, which extends the functionality of mice 1.0 in several ways. In mice , the analysis of imputed data is made completely general, whereas the range of models under…

  • Multiple imputation of discrete and continuous data by fully conditional specification

    Open Access•Stef Van Buuren•ARTICLE•Statistical Methods in Medical…•2007

The goal of multiple imputation is to provide valid inferences for statistical estimates from incomplete data. To achieve that goal, imputed values should preserve the structure in the data, as well as the uncertainty about this structure, and include any knowledge about the process that generated the missing data. Two approaches for imputing multivariate data exist: joint modeling (JM) and fully conditional specification (FCS). JM is based on pa…

  • Referral patterns of children with poor growth in primary health care

Open Access•Floor K Grote, Wilma Oostdijk et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

The current Dutch consensus guideline leads to too many referrals, mainly due to the deflection of length during the first 3 years of life. The UKCG leads to far less referrals, but may be relatively insensitive to detect clinically relevant growth disorders like Turner syndrome. New guidelines for growth monitoring are needed, which combine a low percentage of false positive results with a good sensitivity

  • Age of puberty in Iranian girls living in Tehran

    Open Access•Maryam Razzaghy‐Azar, Maryam Razzaghy-Azar et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2006

The aim of this study was to determine the age of appearance of secondary sexual characteristics in Iranian girls living in Tehran. A cross-sectional study was conducted between 2003 and 2004 on 1420 6-17-year-old females in different parts of Tehran. Data were collected on the basis of a multistage probability sampling. Secondary sexual characteristics were evaluated by inspection and palpation, and were recorded according to Tanner staging. The…

  • Anthropometry of Malawian live births between 35 and 41 weeks of gestation

    Open Access•BF Kalanda, B F Kalanda et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2005

The aim of this analysis was to construct cross-sectional gestational age specific percentile curves for birthweight, length, head and mid-arm circumference for Malawian babies, and to compare these percentiles with reference values for babies born to women with normal pregnancies, from a developed country. A cross-sectional study which enrolled pregnant women attending two study hospitals between March 1993 and July 1994 was undertaken. Data on …

A Miranda Fredriks, Stef Van Buuren et al.•ARTICLE•Pediatric Research•2000

  • Growth in length and weight from birth to 2 years of a representative sample of Netherlands children (born in 1988–89) related to socioeconomic status and other background characteristics

Open Access•W P Herngreen, Stef Van Buuren et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1994

Of nearly 1900 live-born singletons, born from April 1988 to October 1989 inclusive, nine measurements of length and weight have been taken between the ages of 1 and 24 months. In the first part of the study, differences in attained length and weight at 1 and 2 years of age are analysed according to socioeconomic status (SES). Multiple regression analyses are used to investigate the association of SES and other background characteristics with len…

  • Equality Constraints in Multiple Correspondence Analysis

Stef Van Buuren, Jan de Leeuv•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1992

The application of equality constraints on the categories of a variable is a simple but useful extension of multiple correspondence analysis. Equality can be used to incorporate prior knowledge about the relations between categories. Categories may belong to the same variable, to different variables, or both. The simplest form of equality specifies that all variables receive identical data transforms. This is useful, for example, if the same vari…
