Rediscovering Rural Franco-Americans
Scholars of Franco-American history have long studied the urban Little Canadas that developed around textile mills and ethnic parishes. The Québec migrants who settled in rural areas have received comparatively little attention. A sparse documentary trail has held back research on these migrants and their experiences on U.S. soil; so too has the absence of a conceptual framework. Insights from the fields of rural studies and immigration history p…

Franco-Americans and Racial Discourse in Historical Perspective
French Canadian immigrants to the United States and their Franco-American descendants faced discrimination and marginalization due to their religious faith, their language, and their customs. From the late nineteenth century to the Second World War, they occupied an ambiguous place in the country's ethnic and racial landscape. Their uncertain status resulted from their dual identity as a people of Western European descent and as North American se…

Prelude to the “Great Hemorrhage”
Historians have traced the mass migration of French Canadians from the St. Lawrence River valley to the United States between the Civil War era and the Great Depression; to a lesser extent, scholars have also studied outmigration in the 1840s and 1850s. Closer scrutiny of available evidence suggests, however, that the roots of Lower Canada’s great demographic hemorrhage lie in the early decades of the nineteenth century. As cross-border infrastru…
Canadian-Born Soldiers in the Mexican-American War (1846–48)
US Army enlistment records do not merely document military service; they can shed light on otherwise obscure aspects of American immigration history. This is especially true in regard to the Canadian-born men who joined the forces of the republic during the Mexican War (1846–48). Newly retrieved data indicates that approximately 1,500 individuals from British North America enlisted—a fairly widespread survival strategy at a time when people from …

Finding Thoreau in French Canada
Henry David Thoreau’s Yankee in Canada is easily overlooked. Because it is so selective in its depiction of life in the St. Lawrence River valley, historians of mid-nineteenth-century Canada have shown little interest in Thoreau’s first-hand account. To American readers, it offers little of the characteristic Thoreau found in Walden and Resistance to Civil Government. Yet, it is highly significant as an expression of national self-definition. Tho…

From Strangers to “Humanity First”
Founded in 1932, Canada's Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (ccf) brought into a single movement disparate elements that, until then, had shown little inclination to cohere: intellectuals from Central Canada, Prairie farmers, politicized workers, many of them of non-British background, and clergy inspired by the Social Gospel. United during the Great Depression by their shared critique of capitalism, these groups stood more broadly for workers…

Choosing Peace and Order
This article considers the international ramifications of the Canadian Rebellions of 1837, in particular their impact on US politics and policy-making as well as on the state of the international border. The Rebellions and the ensuing border raids led to the deployment of US and British forces in the borderlands, not in pursuit of war but in the interest of peace. Ignoring popular agitation in the Canadian colonies and in border states, the Briti…
Immigration, Minority Rights, and Catholic Policy-Making in Post-War Canada
This paper addresses the Canadian Roman Catholic episcopacy's approach to such issues of public interest as immigration and minority rights between 1945 and 1965. The definition of the Church's involvement in temporal matters, it is here argued, requires an understanding of the institutional interests of Catholicism and traditional Catholic approaches to governance. The conceptual framework offered by contemporary administrative and policy studie…

Arbeitszeit an Schulen
