This research attempts to gain insight into the ‘power’ of visual images, specifically those that accompany lexical–verbal messages in the press. Defeated in war, declared a “criminal organization” by the Nuremburg tribunal, typecast as comic book villains in the popular media, the image of the Waffen‐SS (the military wing of the Nazi‐SS) seemed beyond rehabilitation.
