Where Notaries Provided Legal Services to Medieval Townspeople
If notarial offices in medieval Italian towns had not offered their dual services of commercial law contracts and family law documents on the same premises and in the homes of their clients, perhaps the cross-fertilization of ideas that created the instruments of trade sustaining Europe’s emerging market economy would not have followed. Italian traders carried the contracts that undergirded long-distance trade across Europe and the Mediterranean …
Matilda Gage Writes a World History of Women
Suffragist Matilda's Gage's Woman, Church and State, 1893, invites a revisit because it was a pioneering study in world history with woman as its central issue. While labeled an amateur, Gage's work demonstrated an excellent grasp of nineteenth-century historical scholarship and she offered interpretive insights that tied nascent anthropological theory to historical analysis. For these reasons she is best understood in relation to the women schol…
The Cambridge World History
Volume 5 of the Cambridge World History series uncovers the cross-cultural exchange and conquest, and the accompanying growth of regional and trans-regional states, religions, and economic systems, during the period 500 to 1500 CE. The volume begins by outlining a series of core issues and processes across the world, including human relations with nature, gender and family, social hierarchies, education, and warfare. Further essays examine mariti…
Brideprice, Dowry, and other Marital Assigns
Between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, morgengabe, a husband's gift to his wife marking the formal consummation of marriage, was replaced in Italian, southern French, and Spanish towns with Roman dos or dowry, a gift from a bride's family that was her inheritance (legitim). In time, this momentous change spread north beyond the Alps. The resulting dotal regime abetted the monetization of the economy and placed increased authority in the h…

Housecraft and Statecraft
Unlike modern households, those of late medieval and early modern European societies included many individuals not related by blood or marriage. Prominent among these were domestic servants, members of the lower classes whose duties ranged from managing of the household to raising the children. Within the confines of the household, the powerful and powerless came together in complex and significant ways. In this volume, the author examines the re…

Medieval Workshop
This workshop addressed a question of concern to medieval economic history for over a generation. Frederic C. Lane called for a theory of consumption, and Carlo Cipolla and Robert Lopez have encouraged a more thorough investigation of the role of demand. Because demand is sometimes understood in terms of needs and of taste, it is often subsumed under the heading of social history, which characterizes and describes, while economic analysis has cen…

Urban domestic slavery in medieval Ragusa
Medieval slavery and the slave trade are by now well established facts. This study of medieval Ragusa (Dubrovnik) attempts to answer the question: how were slaves employed, in place of free wage laborers, in urban environments? Ragusa is a well documented instance in which slaves, largely female slaves, were employed in the household. They provided non-specialized labor to the household and to commercial endeavors. This method of utilizing unskil…

Dowry Increase and Increments in Wealth in Medieval Ragusa (Dubrovnik)
Certain data from the familial world have value as a means for charting increments in wealth over the long term. Dowries from medieval Ragusa (Dubrovnik), 1235 to 1460, provide such evidence where other surviving records prove inadequate. Social cohesion and endogamy allowed the noble merchant citizenry to utilize dowries to redistribute personal fortunes broadly, thereby creating broad-based wealth. Comparisons with Italian towns indicate dowry …

Women in Medieval Society
Early medieval women exercised public roles, rights, and responsibilities. Women contributed through their labor to the welfare of the community. Women played an important part in public affairs. They practiced birth control through abortion and infanticide. Women committed crimes and were indicted. They owned property and administered estates. The drive toward economic growth and expansion abroad rested on the capacity of women to staff and mana…

Family Confronts the Renaissance Household
This article is a critique of Herlihy and Klapisch-Zubers book Les Toscans et Leurs Familles [Tuscans and Their Families] which is a historical demographic study based on the Florentine catasto of 1427. The relevance of the book to the study of the family and household is discussed. (ANNOTATION)
