  • Can we do more with refits? Lithic refitting as an epistemological tool and the common center method (CCM)

    Open Access•Hans Vandendriessche•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

  • Limited human mobility during the Neolithic period in the Meuse and Mons basin in Belgium

    Open Access•Ijk Van Hattum, Marta Costas-Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026•Referências: 134

While the introduction of the Neolithic way of life in central Belgium around 5300 BCE is well-documented, the provenance and mobility patterns of Middle to Final Neolithic groups in southern Belgium (Wallonia) remain unclear. This work presents the first multi-element isotopic (strontium, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr; oxygen, δ 18 O; carbon, δ 13 C) data from prehistoric human dental enamel from the region. The study includes a total of 29 individuals, coming f…

  • Continental France and the Benelux

Hans Vandendriessche, Colas Gueret et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Mesolithic…•2025

This chapter concerns the Mesolithic of a vast and highly diverse geographical area extending from the Pyrenees in the south of France to the North Sea coast of Belgium and the Netherlands. Because of this, it not only encompasses the Sauveterrian, but also parts of the Beuronian and Maglemosian cultural spheres. Typochronological data generally allows to divide the Mesolithic of this area in an Early and a Late stage, or in a Premier and Second …

  • Neolithic mortuary behaviour at La Faucille Cave, Meuse Basin (Belgium)

Open Access•I De Groote, Ijk Van Hattum et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2025

The mortuary cave La Faucille is located in Sclayn, in the valley of the Fond des Vaux, a small tributary of the Meuse River (Andenne, prov. of Namur, BE). It was discovered in 1999, and after an initial survey it was excavated from 2015 onwards. The excavations yielded over 3000 identifiable human remains which were found both on the terrace and inside the cave. Also, a small but significant number of archaeological objects were recovered. A ser…

  • The Neolithization Process in the Lower-Scheldt Basin (Belgium, mid-6th to mid-4th Millennium cal BC) from a Lithic Technological Perspective

Liesbeth Messiaen, Hans Vandendriessche et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2022•Citada por: 3•Referências: 7

This paper discusses the results of a detailed analysis of the lithic assemblages from four key sites in the Lower-Scheldt basin of NW Belgium in the context of the Neolithization process beyond the agro-pastoral frontier of the European loess area. The study demonstrates both continuity and change in raw material use, lithic technology and the toolkit throughout the 5th and early 4th millennium cal BC, supporting the theory of acculturation of i…

  • Catching a Glimpse of Mesolithic Settlement Patterns and Site Re-occupation Through Lithic Refitting, Raw Material Characterizations and Absolute Dating

  • Population collapse or human resilience in response to the 9.3 and 8.2 ka cooling events

Open Access•Elliot Van Maldegem, Hans Vandendriessche et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2021•Citada por: 5•Referências: 20

This paper explores the impact of environmental, e.g. sea level rise, and climatic events, e.g. abrupt cooling events, on Mesolithic populations (ca. 11,350 to 6600 cal BP) living in the western Scheldt basin of Belgium and Northern France. The Mesolithic in this study-area has been extensively studied during the last few decades, leading to an extensive database of radiocarbon dates (n = 418), sites (n = 157) and excavated loci (n = 145). A mult…

  • Thermal Alteration of Flint

Géraldine Fiers, Éva Halbrucker et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2021•Citada por: 5•Referências: 28

Archaeological lithic assemblages are often affected by burning, as evident from severe thermal damage on these artefacts. In this study, the thermal alteration of four different flint types was investigated by performing controlled heating experiments in laboratory setting. The resulting heat alterations were afterwards compared to heating of flint samples in campfire experiments, as these correspond better to the burning conditions present duri…

  • Formalized Reduction Sequences from the Site of Kerkhove, Belgium – New Perspectives on Early Mesolithic Flint Knapping

    Open Access•Hans Vandendriessche, Philippe Crombé•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2020•Citada por: 4•Referências: 17

The refitting of eight Early Mesolithic artefact clusters yielded a detailed image of the flint knapping methods applied at the site of Kerkhove (BE). Apart from apparent intra-site variability, the analysis revealed a greater investment in core-shaping than is traditionally present in Early Mesolithic assemblages, combined with a clear preference for bladelet production organized from alternatingly used, opposed striking platforms. Both elements…

  • Preliminary characterization of flint raw material used on prehistoric sites in NW Belgium

Open Access•Géraldine Fiers, Éva Halbrucker et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2018•Citada por: 3•Referências: 22

This study aims at analyzing the mineralogical, chemical, and structural characteristics of flint raw material used for the production of prehistoric stone tools in NW Belgium. Understanding these characteristics is important to recognize their value for tool making and even tool use during prehistory. Due to its formation process, flint is defined by a wide variety of internal structures, chemical variations, and impurities. Moreover, alteration…
