  • The polarity effect in future temporal reference

Open Access•Yiming Liang, Heather Burnett et al.•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2025

This squib brings attention to a longstanding puzzle regarding the mechanism driving the strong polarity effect on future temporal reference in French. Our study presents new findings from two corpora of Parisian French, where negative contexts with n-words significantly favour the usage of synthetic future compared to contexts with the negative marker pas , in contrast to Laurentian French, where synthetic future is predominantly used in all neg…

  • Soft locality restrictions in negative concord

Open Access•Yiming Liang, Pascal Amsili et al.•ARTICLE•Natural Language and Linguistic…•2025•Referências: 65

This paper provides new evidence that syntactic principles that are proposed to explain the (un)grammaticality of a sentence can also hold in sociolinguistic variation. In particular, we argue that two puzzling frequency patterns involving negation in French—the proximity effect on negative concord and the polarity effect on future temporal reference—are deeply related and are both derived from the sensitivity of syntactic agreement to “soft” loc…

  • The Acquisition of Noun and Verb Categories by Bootstrapping From a Few Known Words

Open Access•Perrine Brusini, Olga Seminck et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychology•2021

While many studies have shown that toddlers are able to detect syntactic regularities in speech, the learning mechanism allowing them to do this is still largely unclear. In this article, we use computational modeling to assess the plausibility of a context-based learning mechanism for the acquisition of nouns and verbs. We hypothesize that infants can assign basic semantic features, such as “is-an-object” and/or “is-an-action,” to the very first…

  • New ways of analyzing complementizer drop in Montréal French

Open Access•Yiming Liang, Pascal Amsili et al.•ARTICLE•Language Variation and Change•2021•Referências: 9

In this paper, we return to the well-studied yet still puzzling phenomenon of complementizer omission in a large spoken corpus of Quebec French, with the help of modern computational methods for annotation and mixed effects logistic regression models. Supporting previous work, our study reveals that complementizer que omission is conditioned by social factors and grammatical factors; however, we also find that que omission is conditioned by cogni…

  • Missing Antecedents Found

Open Access•Philip Miller, Barbara Hemforth et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2020

Numerous papers have used so-called `missing antecedent phenomena' as a criterion for distinguishing deep and surface anaphora. Specifically, only the latter are claimed to licence pronouns with missing antecedents. These papers also argue that missing antecedent phenomena provide evidence that surface anaphora involve unpronounced syntactic structure in the ellipsis site. The present paper suggests that the acceptability judgments on which the a…

  • Bootstrapping lexical and syntactic acquisition

Perrine Brusini, Antônio De Carvalho et al.•CHAPTER•Sources of Variation in First…•2018

How does language acquisition start? Having access to words and their meaning should help infants to learn about syntax, but learning about word meaning would be facilitated if infants had access to syntactic structure ( Gleitman 1990 ). Phrasal prosody and function words may bootstrap lexical and syntactic acquisition. Infants have access to phonological phrases, and they use these to constrain the syntactic analysis of utterances by 18 months. …

  • Optionality in the Use of Too

    Laurent Roussarie, Pascal Amsili•ARTICLE•Modèles linguistiques•2007
