Item Overlap Correlations
Four item overlap coefficient (IOC) formulae have been proposed in the literature to measure the effects of overlapping items on the relation of scales which share these items. 10C derivations of this article lead to (a) six caveats concerning the calculation and interpretation of IOCs, and (b) six possible explanations of why the factor structures of MMPI and MCMI scales appear to be strongly influenced by item overlap
Correcting Correlations of Personality Scales for Spurious Effects of Shared Items
Budescu and Rodgers (1981) noted that zero-order correlations of scales which have items in common have spurious components due to the overlapping elements. They proposed a method of adjusting these correlations, to eliminate the spurious component, and applied this method to correct the normative zero-order correlations of the nine original Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) clinical scales. This article draws attention to the fa…
Factors Affecting Perceptions of Political Candidates Accused of Sexual and Financial Misconduct
Eighty subjects viewed a videotaped simulated debate between an incumbent candidate and his challenger for a fictitious post of County Commissioner. In a 2 x 2 x 2 design, either the incumbent candidate or his subordinate was accused of sexual or financial misconduct, and the incumbent candidate either denied the misconduct charges or apologized for the misconduct. Consistent with Schlenker's (1980) theory of impression management, denial of misc…
Determination of the Number of Items and Passing Score in a Mastery Test
Wilcox (1976) has recently recommended the use of binomial tables to determine the minimum number of items ( n) and the minimum passing score ( x c ) for a mastery test, which would yield acceptable risks of misclassifying an examinee. Fhaner (1974) described another method of estimating n and x c , which is based on normal approximation to binomial distributions. The present paper describes a method of estimating n and x c when n is too large to…
On the Power of Multiple Independent Tests When the Experimentwise Error Rate is Controlled
The problem of controlling the probability (EW) that at least one Type I Error occur in a family of N statistical tests, has received much attention in recent psychological literature. However, the related problem of assessing the loss of Power in the collection of N tests, resulting from keeping EW at a tolerably low level, has received relatively little attention. The present paper addresses itself to this problem in the case of a family of tes…
Dependence of the Relative Difficulty of True-False and Grouped True-False Tests On the Ability Levels of the Examinees
This note demonstrates that the relative difficulty of Separate and Grouped True-False tests may be expected to be dependent on the ability levels of the examinees

A Comparison of Three Methods of Scoring True-False Tests
Eakin and Long (1977) have recently proposed a scoring technique for True-False tests which they indicate "offset(s) some disadvantages in the two standard scoring techniques—percentage right scoring and the right minus wrong scoring" (p. 659). The present paper notes that the advantages of the Eakin and Long technique over the standard techniques, are attained at the cost of a larger risk of misranking the examinees
Agreement or Disagreement of a Set of Likert-Type Ratings
This paper describes an exact small sample test, and provides a table of critical values for an approximate large sample test, to determine if a sample of Likert-Type ratings indicates significant agreement or disagreement in a population of such ratings
Determination of Significance Levels for Tests of Item Validity
The desirability of performing tests of significance of measures of item validity (in item analyses) has been noted in a number of texts (Magnuson, 1966; Guilford and Fruchter, 1973; Anastasi, 1968). However the problem of determining the significance level (α) which should be used in these statistical tests, in order to control the risk of occurrence of an excessive number of Type I Errors has, apparently, received little attention. The present …

An Examination of Cooper's Test for Monotonic Trend
Cooper (1975) presents "a new test for increasing or decreasing trend" which, he indicates, (1) is superior to the Cox-Stuart tests because it is defined in terms of more Bernoulli trials, and (2) is a binomial test. The present paper shows that Cooper's test statistic (1) is not a binomial random variable, but (2) is linearly related to Kendall's Tau
Overcorrection Treatment for Radical Reduction of Aggressive-Disruptive Behavior in Institutionalized Mental Patients
This study was designed to extend and evaluate a new treatment, overcorrection, for the radical reduction of aggressive-disruptive behavior. The treatment emphasized four specific attributes. The first was reeducation in prosocial adaptive responses; the second was an extended period of work and effort; the third was time out from general positive reinforcement; the fourth was the prevention of any reinforcement from the disruptive behavior itsel…
