Pain Outweighs Negative Emotions in the Perception of Facial Configuration Sequences
Physical characteristics of digital characters influence group categorization and recognition of affective states
Ethnic bias in social group categorization and recognition of affective states persist in diverse countries like Canada, potentially affecting interactions with minority groups. With the growing use of digital characters (DCs) across various settings, it becomes crucial to explore whether these biases extend to virtual environments to mitigate these issues. This study created and validated 16 realistic DCs to examine how individuals perceive thei…
Reproducing age and sex biases in perceived pain intensity and prosocial behaviors using digital characters
Objective Social Isolation Predicts Perspective-Taking and Empathic Concern
Perceived social isolation (PSI) predicts adverse health and behaviour problems better than objective social isolation (OSI). PSI is related to higher sensitivity to negative emotional states and emotional dysregulation. Some studies suggest that the more socially isolated people feel, the more sensitive they are to the suffering of others, yet the less empathic they are. However, no study has tested the association between social isolation and e…
Nonverbal behaviors perceived as most empathic in a simulated medical context
Perceiving empathy from healthcare professionals contributes to clinical benefits. Yet, for methodological and ethical reasons, the factors affecting perceived empathy, such as how the nonverbal behaviors of professionals interact, are less understood than those influencing the actual act of empathizing. Two online studies examined how the perception of empathy in a medical context of pain was influenced by factors related to digital healthcare p…
Therapist and client perceptions of empathy in simulated teletherapy sessions
Empathy is thought to be reduced in videoconference (VC) compared to face-to-face (F2F) therapy. To empirically test this possibility, therapist and client ratings of empathy and its correlates were examined in VC and F2F sessions. Forty-eight students in clinical training programs were randomly assigned to the role of ‘therapist’ or ‘client’, forming 24 dyads. Each dyad completed a simulated clinical session in F2F and in VC and reported on empa…
Combining trunk movement and facial expression enhances the perceived intensity and believability of an avatar's pain expression
I Can But I Shall Not Always Be Empathic
Empathy, a core process for social interactions, is the capacity to understand and share others' mental states and emotions. Each individual is thought to have a maximum level of empathy (empathic ability) and a spontaneous tendency to express it (empathic propensity), which can be affected by multiple factors. Two within-subject studies were conducted to assess the malleability of empathy by modulating contextual factors and measuring their inte…
A biopsychosocial formulation of pain communication
We present a detailed framework for understanding the numerous and complicated interactions among psychological and social determinants of pain through examination of the process of pain communication. The focus is on an improved understanding of immediate dyadic transactions during painful events in the context of broader social phenomena. Fine-grain consideration of social transactions during pain leads to an appreciation of sociobehavioral eve…
A Social-Neuroscience Perspective on Empathy
In recent years, abundant evidence from behavioral and cognitive studies and functional-imaging experiments has indicated that individuals come to understand the emotional and affective states expressed by others with the help of the neural architecture that produces such states in themselves. Such a mechanism gives rise to shared representations, which constitutes one important aspect of empathy, although not the sole one. We suggest that other …
How do we perceive the pain of others? A window into the neural processes involved in empathy
The Functional Architecture of Human Empathy
Empathy accounts for the naturally occurring subjective experience of similarity between the feelings expressed by self and others without loosing sight of whose feelings belong to whom. Empathy involves not only the affective experience of the other person’s actual or inferred emotional state but also some minimal recognition and understanding of another’s emotional state. In light of multiple levels of analysis ranging from developmental psycho…

Agricultural Geography: A Social and Economic Analysis
This is the first text on agricultural geography to adopt a primarily behavioural perspective, demonstrating that a realistic understanding of agricultural land-use patterns can only be obtained by examining farmers' reactions to, and perceptions of, changing economic circumstances. It analyses agricultual land-use pattern in terms of social and economic factors. Readership: first degree students in agricultural geography, economic geography, and…
