  • Mental health and conflict: A pilot of an online eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) intervention for forcibly displaced Syrian women

Open Access•Aseel Hamid, Amanda C De C Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background: The Syrian conflict has been ongoing since 2011. Practical and scalable solutions are urgently needed to meet an increase in need for specialised psychological support for post-traumatic stress disorder given limited availability of clinicians. Training forcibly displaced Syrians with a mental health background to remotely deliver specialised interventions increases the availability of evidence based psychological support. Little is k…

Open Access•Mohammed Fahim Uddin, Amanda C De C Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Muslim Mental Health•2022•Citada por: 4•Referências: 25

Perceived discrimination, a subjective appraisal of disadvantageous treatment on the grounds of identity, is negatively associated with wellbeing. We explored this association among British Muslim students, sampled online, by questions about perceived and experienced discrimination, visibility as a Muslim, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and positivity. Results from 457 respondents showed greater discrimination was experienced by those with m…

  • Displaced Syrian Mental Health Workers: An Investigation of Professional Quality of Life

Open Access•Aseel Hamid, Katrina Scior et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2020•Referências: 2

This study investigates levels of secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and compassion satisfaction in Syrian mental health workers (MHWs) in a low-resource post-conflict environment. Sixty-one Syrian MHWs completed a cross-sectional questionnaire, in Arabic, incorporating the professional quality of life (ProQOL) scale. Our Arabic-translated ProQOL scale showed acceptable internal consistency estimates of reliability for all subscales. Relative t…

  • Images as catalysts for meaning-making in medical pain encounters: A multidisciplinary analysis

    Open Access•Deborah Padfield, Helen Omand et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2018•Citada por: 4•Referências: 3

The challenge for those treating or witnessing pain is to find a way of crossing the chasm of meaning between them and the person living with pain. This paper proposes that images can strengthen agency in the person with pain, particularly but not only in the clinical setting, and can create a shared space within which to negotiate meaning. It draws on multidisciplinary analyses of unique material resulting from two fine art/medical collaboration…

  • Treatment of persistent pain from torture: Review and commentary

    Amanda C De C Williams, Kirstine Amris•ARTICLE•Medicine Conflict & Survival•2017

Torture and the conditions under which it is inflicted often leave persistent painful disorders. Because there may be no lasting signs, persistent pain is often misconceived as a somatic representation of psychological distress, also common after torture. This serious failure to understand the nature of persistent pain means that pain is largely overlooked and untreated in torture survivors. We carried out a systematic review on treatments for pa…

  • If I speak English, what am I? I am full man, me: Emotional impact and barriers for refugees and asylum seekers learning English

    Open Access•Tania Salvo, Amanda C De C Williams•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatry•2017•Citada por: 4•Referências: 75

Lack of proficiency in the language of the host country predicts distress among refugees, but many refugees and asylum seekers in the United Kingdom have less than functional English. This study examined how learning English affected refugees' and asylum seekers' lives, particularly their emotional wellbeing, to explore what factors, particularly psychological ones, facilitated or impeded their learning English. We recruited 16 refugees and asylu…

  • Go-with-the-Flow: Tracking, Analysis and Sonification of Movement and Breathing to Build Confidence in Activity Despite Chronic Pain

Open Access•Aneesha Singh, Stefano Piana et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•2015

Chronic (persistent) pain (CP) affects 1 in 10 adults; clinical resources are insufficient, and anxiety about activity restricts lives. Technological aids monitor activity but lack necessary psychological support. This article proposes a new sonification framework, Go-with-the-Flow, informed by physiotherapists and people with CP. The framework proposes articulation of user-defined sonified exercise spaces (SESs) tailored to psychological needs a…

  • Pornography, porno, porn: Thoughts on a weedy field

    Amanda C De C Williams•ARTICLE•Porn Studies•2014•Citada por: 9•Referências: 29

This article provides an overview of the state of ‘pornography, porno, porn’ studies grounded on a critique of my own anthology and other significant texts. It notes the (over)abundance of work on gay pornography versus the surprising paucity on heterosexual pornographies; the under-representation of soft core; the near non-existence of an ‘archive’; and the need for more original single-authored books. Finally, the article makes a plea that crit…

  • A biopsychosocial formulation of pain communication

    Thomas Hadjistavropoulos, Kenneth D Craig et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2011•Citada por: 26•Referências: 10

We present a detailed framework for understanding the numerous and complicated interactions among psychological and social determinants of pain through examination of the process of pain communication. The focus is on an improved understanding of immediate dyadic transactions during painful events in the context of broader social phenomena. Fine-grain consideration of social transactions during pain leads to an appreciation of sociobehavioral eve…

  • Swaying with Schumann: Subjectivity and Tradition in Wolfgang Rihm's 'Fremde Szenen' I-III and Related Scores

    A Williams, Amanda C De C Williams•ARTICLE•Music and Letters•2006•Citada por: 2

Fremde Szenen I–III (1982–4) is a set of piano trios by Wolfgang Rihm, one of Europe's leading contemporary composers. Inspired by Robert Schumann, these pieces engage the swaying fluidity of his musical sensibility as a memory and as a direct presence. They immediately pose questions for anyone familiar with the traditions engaged by Rihm's music. What does it mean at the end of the twentieth century to compose Schumann-inspired music? What does…

  • Rumney Castle, a Ringwork and Manorial Centre in South Glamorgan

    K W B Lightfoot, Kenneth Lightfoot et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1992•Referências: 5

RUMNEY CASTLE, a small ringwork historically part of the marcher lordship of Gwynllŵg, was situated above a steep natural scarp overlooking the R. Rhymney. First mentioned in A.D. 1184–85, the castle guarded the W. boundary of the lordship and the river crossing. The defences consisted of a ditch and clay rampart constructed around three sides of the site. Initially incorporated into the defences along the fourth side was a large timber building …

  • Cledemutha: A Late Saxon Burh in North Wales

    Jim Manley, K Brassil et al.•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•1987•Citada por: 1•Referências: 6

In A.D. 921 Edward the Elder is recorded as having built the borough or burh at Cledemutha. On the basis of excavations in 1979–82 it is argued that a three-sided earthwork enclosing a large area to the south of modern Rhuddlan, Clwyd (Flintshire), forms the defences of this late Saxon burh. Evidence is presented for the dating, method of construction, original appearance and subsequent slighting of the defences. Comparisons are made with other l…

    A Williams, Amanda C De C Williams•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1974

Much economic analysis of health care systems employs measures of effectiveness which relate to workload or provision rather than to the health status of the individual. A conceptually correct measure is sketched out, and it is argued that such a measure is operationally feasible, though it requires careful analytical treatment, and a clearly specified division of responsibility between various research disciplines, administrators and policy-make…
